Year-on-year decrease in agricultural producer prices

In September 2008, compared to the previous month, agricultural and industrial producer prices fell by 6.1% and 0.1%, respectively. Prices of construction work and market services grew by 0.3% and 1.2%, respectively.
In comparison to September 2007, agricultural producer prices decreased by 4.4%. Prices of industrial producers, construction work and market services were down by 5.5%, 4.6% and 4.0%, respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were down by 6.1% in total. Prices of crop products fell by 10.0% due to lower prices of potatoes (-32.5%). The prices of cereals, oil plants, fruit and vegetables dropped by 7.5%, 9.1%, 7.8% and 5.4%, respectively. Prices of animal products decreased by 1.3%; prices of milk (-2.9%), poultry (-2.3%) and cattle for slaughter (-0.9%) fell. Higher prices were recorded for pigs for slaughter (+2.0%).
After eight moths of growth, industrial producer prices went down by 0.1% (+0.4% in August). The prices dropped most notably in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ and in ‘other manufactured goods n.e.c.’ (-1.9% both). Price decreases were recorded also in ‘other non-metallic mineral products’ by 0.9% and in ‘food products beverages and tobacco’ by 0.3% (especially ‘prepared animal feed’ by 4.2%). On the other hand, prices went up primarily in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ by 1.2%.
Construction work prices rose by 0.3%, construction material input prices fell by 0.2%.
Prices of market services in the business sphere increased by 1.2% due to a 2.0% price growth in ‘real estate, renting and business services’. In September, considerable price increases were recorded for TV and radio commercials (+21.8%). Prices of ‘post and telecommunication services’ fell (-0.6%) due to lower prices of the Internet access providers.
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices fell by 4.4% for the first time since May 2006 (+6.3% in August). Prices of crop products fell by 7.2%, mainly due to a 12.6% price decrease in cereals (+4.4% in September) and potatoes (-14.2%). The prices of fruit (-23.4%) and vegetables (-20.6%) also decreased. The prices of oil plants were up by 12.5%. Prices of animal products were lower by 1.0%; on the decrease were eggs (-6.3%), milk (-2.0%) and cattle for slaughter (-2.1%). A price increase was recorded for pigs for slaughter (+1.6%).
Industrial producer prices rose by 5.5% (+5.7 in August). Price level was significantly influenced by prices of ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+10.8%, the biggest increase since May 2005), ‘electricity, gas, steam and hot water’ (+9.1%) and ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 6.5% (of which ‘other food products’ by 9.1%). Prices decreased primarily in ‘transport equipment’ (-6.0%), ‘wood and products of wood and cork’ (-5.3%) and ‘rubber and plastic products’ (-2.3%).
Among the main industrial groupings, the biggest increases were recorded for prices of ‘energy’ (+12.8%) and ‘intermediate goods’ (+5.1%).
Construction work prices were up by 4.6% (+4.7 in August); construction material input prices grew by 2.7% (+2.3% in August).
Prices of market services in the business sphere rose by 4.0% in total (+3.6% in August). Prices of ‘real estate, renting and business services’ increased by 5.4% (prices of advertising services and prices of architectural and engineering activities were up by 7.7% and 10.8%, respectively). Prices of ‘freight transport and storage services’ rose by 4.0%.
Industrial producer prices in the EU – August 2008*
According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices decreased in EU27 by 0.7% (+1.2% in July), month-on-month. Among the Member States for which data are available, the biggest decreases were recorded in Denmark and the United Kingdom (-1.8% both), in the Netherlands and Greece (-1.1% both). In Germany prices went down by 0.6%. The biggest price increases were recorded in Lithuania (+1.9%), Luxembourg (+1.8%) and Romania (+1.4%). Prices in Slovakia increased by 0.2%.
Year-on-year, prices in the EU27 grew by 10.4% in August (+11.3% in July). The biggest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+27.0%), Denmark (+20.5%) and Lithuania (+20.4%), the smallest in the Czech Republic (+5.2%), Ireland (+6.2%) and Slovakia (+6.7%). Prices in Germany were up by 8.1%. No decrease below the price level recorded in August 2007 was recorded among the EU countries.

Except for the construction work price indices, the data are final. The construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the final data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
