Producer price indices - August 2012

Month-on-month increase of prices of the industrial producers after four months

In August 2012 compared with the previous month, agricultural producer prices decreased by 0.9%, industrial producer prices grew by 0.5%. Construction work prices and market services prices stayed both unchanged.
In comparison to August 2011, prices of agricultural and industrial producer prices increased by 4.6% and 1.9%, respectively. Prices of construction works and market services were lower by 0.4% and 0.9%, respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:

Aricultural producer prices in total decreased (-0.9%). Prices of crop products after seven months of growth fell by 1.3% as a result of lower prices of vegetables (-27.7%), fruit (-11.3%) and oil plants (-1.5%). Prices of cereals were higher by 2.6%. Prices of animal products decreased (-0.5%) due to lower prices of milk (-1.8%) and eggs (-1.3%). Prices of cattle for slaughter and pigs for slaughter were higher by 1.4% and 0.4%, respectively.

Prices of industrial producers increased by 0.5%. The fastest rate of the growth was recorded for prices in ‘coke, refined petroluem products’ (+7.9%) and ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+3.4%). Prices went up in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (+0.4%), of these ‘vegetable and animal oils and fats’ (+4.9%) and ‘prepared animal feeds’ (+4.2%).
Prices went down in ‘transport equipment’ (-0.8%), ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (−0.7%) and ‘rubber and plastic products, other non-metallic mineral products’ (-0.6%).

According to an estimate, construction work prices stayed unchanged, construction material input prices stayed fell by 0.4%

Market services prices in the business sphere stayed unchanged. Prices of advertising and market research services increased by 0.5%. In contrast, financial intermediation, except insurance fell by 0.3%. Market services prices in total excluding advertising services also remained unchanged.

Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were higher by 4.6% (2.4% in July). Prices of crop products grew by 8.3%, primarily prices of oil plants increased (+10.0%), cereals (+11.8%) and vegetables (+17.3%). Prices of potatoes fell (-19.6%). Animal products prices decreased by 0.1% (last price drop was recorded in January 2010). Prices of milk fell by 12.6%. Price of eggs grew (+42.6%), prices of cattle for slaughter increased as well (+12.5%). Prices of pigs for slaughter and poultry also grew (+12.1%) and (+1.0%), respectively.

Industrial producer prices gained 1.9% (+1.3% in July). Prices increased significantly in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+14.7%), ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+5.3%) and ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (+2.1%), of these in ‘vegetable and animal oils and fats’ (+11.1%) and ‘other food products’ (+7.5%). Prices fell in ‘mining and quarrying’ (-3.3%), of these in ‘coal and lignite’ (-6.6%) and on the other hand went up in ‘crude petroleum and natural gas’ (+10.2%). Prices decreased in ‘basic metals fabricated metal products’ (-0.5%).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+4.4%) increased the most, prices of ‘durable consumer goods’ (-0.5%) decreased only.

According to an estimate, construction work prices were down by 0.4% (-0.5% in July). Construction material input prices were up by 0.9% (+1.0% in July).

Market services prices in the business sphere decreased by 0.9% (the same as in July). Decreasing were prices in advertising and market research services (-5.7%), architectural and engineering services (-2.8%) and telecommunication services (-1.0%). On the increase were prices of freight transport services (+0.8%) and financial intermediation, except insurance (+3.5%). Market services prices excluding advertising services decreased by 0.3% the same as in July).

Industrial producer prices in the EU – July 2012*

According to the Eurostat News Releases industrial producer prices in the EU27 increased by 0.4% in July (-0.8% in June), month-on-month. Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Greece (+2.1%), Bulgaria (+1.9%) and Lithuania (+1.5%) and the largest decreases in Denmark (-1.6%), Ireland and Sweden (-0.8% both). Prices decreased in the Czech Republic (-0.3%), Austria and Slovakia (-0.2% both), Poland (-0.1%) and remained stable in Germany.

EU27 producer prices rose by 1.5% in July (+1.6% in June), year-on-year. The largest increases were observed in Cyprus (+6.9%), Hungary (+6.1%), Bulgaria and Romania (+4.5% both). Prices rose in Slovakia (+3.7%), Poland (+3.3%), the Czech Republic (+1.3%), Germany (+0.9%) and in Austria (+0.2%). Decreases were recorded only in Denmark (-0.9%), Sweden (−0.8%) and the United Kingdom (-0.3%).
