The first y-o-y growth of industrial producer prices after 16 months

In April 2010, agricultural and industrial producer prices and market services prices increased by 0.2%, 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively. Construction work prices decreased by 0.1%.
In comparison to April 2009, agricultural producer prices, construction work prices and market services prices were lower by 4.5%, 0.2% and 1.7%, respectively. Industrial producer prices increased by 0.4%.

Monthly changes
Agricultural producer prices increased by 0.2% in total. Prices of crop products fell by 0.3% due to lower prices of cereals (-1.3%), fruit (-5.6%) and vegetables (-13.5%). Higher were prices of potatoes (+1.5%). Prices of animal products increased by 0.6%. Growth was recorded for prices of eggs (+1.1%), milk (+0.9%) and pigs for slaughter (+0.7%). Prices of poultry dropped by 0.7%.
Industrial producer prices increased by 0.7%. Prices went up significantly in ‘mining and quarrying’ (+6.2%), ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+4.0%), ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+5.5%) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+1.8%). Prices decreased primarily in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ and ‘rubber and plastic products’ (-0.5% both).
According to an estimate, construction work prices fell by 0.1%, construction material input prices remained unchanged.
Market services prices in the business sphere grew by 0.6%, affected by price increases of 6.2% in advertising and market research services and 3.3% in employment services. On the decrease were prices in computer programming, consultancy (-0.9%). Market services prices excluding advertising services decreased in total by 0.1%.
Annual changes
Agricultural producer prices were down by 4.5% (-4.9% in March). Prices of crop products fell by 10.8%, mainly due to price decreases in potatoes (-30.5%), fruit (-21.4%) and cereals (-10.3%). Higher were prices of vegetables (+8.9%). Animal products prices increased (+2.5%). Increases were registered for prices of milk (+16.3%) and eggs (+9.9%). On the decrease were prices of cattle for slaughter (-2.1%), poultry (-5.2%) and pigs for slaughter (-12.4%).
After 16 months of decreases industrial producer prices increased by 0.4% (-0.8% in March). The largest influence on the total y-o-y index had the growth of prices primarily in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 42.6% (+41.5% in March), ‘chemicals and chemical products’ by 21.3% (+19.1% in March) and ‘mining and quarrying’ by 6.4% (-0.3% in March). Prices went down the most significantly in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ by 5.9% (-10.1% in March), ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (-3.9%) and ‘transport equipments’ (-5.2%).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ increased the most (+8.3%); the largest decreases were recorded for ‘non-durable consumer goods’ (-3.7%) and ‘capital goods’ (-3.2%).
According to an estimate, construction work prices were down by 0.2% (-0.1% in March). Construction material input prices were down by 1.7% (-2.2% in March).
Market services prices in the business sphere were down by 1.7% (-1.9% in March). Decreasing were prices in advertising and market research services (-6.6%), real estate services (-3.4%), and telecommunications services (-2.7%). Higher prices were recorded in employment services (+14.0%). Market services prices excluding advertising services decreased by 0.9%, the same as in March.
Industrial producer prices in the EU – March 2010*
According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in the EU27, increased by 0.7% in March (+0.1% in February) month-on-month. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in the United Kingdom (+1.7%), Bulgaria and Greece (+1.3% both), Belgium and Lithuania (+1.1% both). Prices went up in Germany (+0.7%) and in Slovakia (+0.5%). Decreases were observed only in Sweden (-1.7%), Denmark (-1.2%), Estonia (-0.4%) and Ireland (-0.3%).
EU27 producer prices rose by 1.7% in March (+0.4% in February) year-on-year. The highest increases were observed in Greece (+7.9%), the United Kingdom (+5.6%), Denmark and Finland (+5.5% both) and Belgium (+5.0%). The largest decreases were recorded in Latvia (-7.8%), Slovakia (-6.1%) and Germany (-1.7%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the data are finalised. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
