Producer price indices - August 2018

Prices decreased in agriculture, increased in industry, y-o-y

In August 2018 compared with the previous month, agricultural producer prices (+1.3%), industrial producer prices (+0.1%), construction work prices (+0.3%) and prices of market services for businesses (+0.2%) all went up. In comparison to August 2017, agricultural producer prices went down by 2.1%. Industrial producer prices and construction work prices were both higher by 3.3% and 3.5%, respectively. Prices of market services for businesses rose by 1.5%.
 

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices increased by 1.3%. Prices of poultry (+5.0%), oil plants (+2.7%), eggs (+2.1%), cereals (+2.0%), pigs for slaughter (+0.9%) and milk (+0.5%) went up. On the decrease were prices of cattle for slaughter (-1.1%) and potatoes (-26.9%).

Prices of industrial producers went up by 0.1%. The fastest increase was observed in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’. Higher were prices in ‘transport equipment’ (+0.2%), thereof ‘motor vehicles’ (+1.1%). Prices rose in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ also by 0.2%, thereof ‘grain mill products, starches and starch products’ (+2.4%). Prices increased in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ (+0.2%) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+0.3%). Prices fell in ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (-0.5%) and ‘electrical equipment’ (-0.8%).

According to an estimate, construction work prices increased by 0.3% and construction material input prices fell by 0.1%.

Prices of market services for businesses were higher by 0.2%. On the increase were prices of ‘advertising and market research services’ (+4.8%), ‘financial services, except insurance and pension funding’ (+0.5%) and ‘land transport services and transport services via pipelines’ (+0.4%). On the decrease were prices of ‘architectural and engineering services’ (-0.9%) and ‘warehousing and support services for transportation’ (-0.3%). Prices of market services for businesses excluding advertising services stayed unchanged.
 

Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were lower by 2.1% (-4.4% in July). Prices of crop products grew by 0.9% due to increasing prices of fresh vegetables (+19.8%) and cereals (+5.3%). Lower were prices of fruit (-43.3%), potatoes (-24.9%) and oil plants (-5.1%). Prices of animal products went down by 5.2%. Lower were prices of pigs for slaughter (-19.9%) and milk (-3.0%). Prices of eggs (+1.7%) and poultry (+4.3%) both went up.

Prices of industrial producers rose by 3.3% (+3.4% in July) y-o-y. Prices rose primarily in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’. On the increase were prices in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+4.1%), ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ (+2.6%), ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+8.1%) and ‘mining and quarrying’ (+10.1%). Prices decreased in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (-1.0%), thereof ‘preserved meat and meat products’ (-5.2%) and ‘other food products’ (-5.7%), on the other hand, prices rose in ‘grain mill products, starches and starch products’ (+4.4%). Lower were prices in ‘transport equipment’ (-0.7%), thereof ‘parts and accessories for motor vehicles’ (-1.8%), vice versa, higher were prices in ‘motor vehicles’ (+2.3%).

Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+9.6%) increased the most.

According to an estimate, construction work prices rose by 3.5% (+3.4% in July) and construction material input prices grew by 4.4% (+4.5% in July).

Prices of market services for businesses were higher by 1.5% (+1.7% in July). Increasing were prices in ‘security and investigation services’ (+9.3%) and ‘employment services’ (+5.3%). On the increase were also prices of ‘real estate services’ (+2.9%), ‘land transport services and transport services via pipelines’ (+1.7%), ‘architectural and engineering services’ (+1.2%) and ‘publishing services’ (+0.9%). Lower were prices of ‘management consulting services’ (-1.3%) and ‘warehousing and support services for transportation’ (-2.9%). Prices of market services for businesses excluding advertising services increased by 1.6% (+1.8% in July). 
 

Industrial producer prices in the EU – July 2018 (preliminary data)

According to the Eurostat News Releases, industrial producer prices increased in July by 0.3% (+0.5% in June) in EU28, month-on-month. The highest increase in industrial producer prices was observed in Estonia (+2.3%). Prices were higher in Slovakia (+0.8%), the Czech Republic and Austria (+0.3% both), Germany (+0.2%) and Poland (+0.1%). Prices decreased the most in Luxembourg and Romania (-0.4% both).

Industrial producer prices were higher in July by 4.7% (+4.5% in June) in EU28, year-on-year.

The highest increase in industrial producer prices was recorded in Belgium (+9.8%). Prices went up in Slovakia (+6.9%), Austria (+4.2%), Poland (+3.9%), the Czech Republic (+3.4%) and Germany (+3.1%). The only decrease was observed in Ireland (-2.8%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the published data are finalised. Estimates of the construction work price indices are carrying out on the 9th calendar day of the following day. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 46th calendar day of the following quarter.
