Producer prices grew moderately month-on-month

Month-on-month comparison:
Agricultural producer prices remained unchanged. Prices of vegetables (-25.2%), potatoes (-2.7%), fruit (-2.5%) and cattle for slaughter (-1.2%) decreased. Prices of eggs (+7.5%), cereals (+0.7%) and poultry (+0.3%) were higher.
Industrial producer prices rose by 0.2%. A decisive influence on the increase of the total price level was the growth of prices in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+8.3%). On the other hand, fall in prices was going on in ‘basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (-0.7%) and in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (-0.5%).
Prices of construction work grew by 0.3% and prices of construction material inputs decreased by 0.8%.
Market services prices in the business sphere grew by 0.8%. Prices of ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ increased by 1.6% due to higher prices of TV and radio commercials and of ‘exhibition, fair and congress organisation services’. Prices of ‘post and telecommunication services’ fell by 1.4% as a result of a temporary decrease in prices of SMS (mobile operators) and a lower charge for installation of fixed telephone lines.
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were lower by 6.7% (-8.5% in August) due to a 15.6% decrease in prices of crop products. Prices of cereals (-20.4%, particularly wheat), potatoes (-17.9%) and oil plants (-10.7%) continued decreasing. Prices of vegetables were higher by 18.2% and, for the first time since September 2004, so were prices of fruit (+10.2%). Prices of animal products decreased by 2.2%. Prices of eggs, pigs and poultry were lower by 9.2%, 7.8% and 6.0%, respectively. Prices of cattle for slaughter (+8.1%) and milk (+1.8%) were up.
Industrial producer prices were higher by 1.0% (+1.1% in August). The slowdown of y-o-y growth of the total prices level, which takes already eleven months was caused by higher price decreases in ‘basic metals and fabricated metal products’ by 4.1% (-1.9% in August) and ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 2.3% (-2.0% in August). On the other hand, prices of ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ increased by 16.4%.
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+11.5%) and ‘consumer durables’ (+1.8%) grew most.
Prices of construction work were higher by 2.5% (+2.2% in August) and prices of construction material inputs decreased by 0.3% (+0.9% in August).
Market services prices in the business sphere grew by 2.8% (+2.3% in August) in total, responding to higher prices in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ by 2.5% (price increases in ‘advertising services’, ‘computer and related services’ and ‘exhibition, fair and congress organisation services’) and ‘post and telecommunication services’ by 4.2% (especially higher prices of ‘postal services’). Further, prices were higher in ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’ and in ‘national freight transportation services’.
Industrial producer prices in the EU – August 2005*
On average for the EU member states (EU25), according to data of Eurostat, industrial producer prices were up by 0.5% m-o-m in August 2005. The highest m-o-m increases among member states for which data are available were recorded in Lithuania (+1.1%), Hungary (+1.0%), the United Kingdom and Denmark (+0.9% both). Prices in Slovakia increased by 0.8% and in Germany by 0.3%. A decrease was observed only in Ireland (-0.2%).
In terms of y-o-y comparison, prices in the EU25 grew by 5.1% in total in August 2005, most in the United Kingdom (+11.1%), Denmark (+10.3%), the Netherlands (+7.5%) and Hungary (+7.4%). Prices in Slovakia were higher by 5.6% and in Germany by 4.6%.

Except for price indices of construction work, the data are final. Price indices of construction work are updated using the finished quarterly survey, and final data are published on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
