Growing prices of food and refined petroleum products

In November 2007, compared to the previous month, prices of agricultural and industrial producers and prices of construction work grew by 3.3%, 0.7% and 0.3%, respectively. Prices of market services fell by 0.1%.
In comparison to November 2006, prices of agricultural and industrial producers, construction work and market services were higher by 26.9%, 5.4%, 4.4% and 1.9%, respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:
Agricultural producer prices grew by 3.3% in total. Prices of crop products rose by 2.8%; higher were prices of fruit (+2.9%), cereals (+3.7%) and oil plants (+4.8%). Prices of potatoes and vegetables fell by 7.0% and 7.4%, respectively. Prices of animal products increased by 3.9% due to higher prices of eggs (+13.2%), milk (+10.8%) and poultry (+1.6%). Prices of pigs for slaughter (-8.2%) and cattle for slaughter (-0.7%) fell.
Prices of industrial producers rose by 0.7% (+0.4% in October). The most significant price increases were observed in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 3.0% (+1.8% in October) and in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 7.8% (+1.4% in October). Among ‘food products’ prices of ‘grain mill products, starches and starch products’ (+6.4%), ‘dairy products and ice cream’ and ‘other food products’ (+4.8% both) increased the most. Only prices of ‘meat and meat products’ went down by 1.5%. Significant price decreases were observed in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ by 1.0% and in ‘transport equipment’ by 0.9%.
Construction work prices and construction material input prices grew by 0.3% and dropped by 0.5%, respectively.
Prices of market services in the business sphere fell by 0.1% as a result of 1.0% and 0.3% price decreases occurring in ‘post services and telecommunications’ (transitional discounts in services provided by mobile network operators) and ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’, respectively.
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were higher by 26.9% (+24.4% in October). Prices of crop products grew by 42.2%, especially due to higher prices of cereals (+70.8%) and fruit (+81.7%). Also prices of vegetables (+14.6%) and oil plants (+37.9%) were up. Prices of potatoes fell by 28.3%. Prices of animal products were higher by 11.4%. Prices of eggs, milk and poultry increased by 33.1%, 22.5% and 21.3%, respectively. Lower were prices of pigs for slaughter (-9.7%) and cattle for slaughter (-3.0%).
Prices of industrial producers went up by 5.4% in November (+4.4% in October), which is the most since April 2005. This increase was affected mainly by higher prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 10.1% (+6.0% in October), ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 25.5% (+14.8% in October) and ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ by 7.6% (like in October). Prices decreased only in ‘transport equipment’ by 2.1% (-1.4% in October) and in ‘rubber and plastic products’ by 1.7% (-0.9% in October) y-o-y.
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+12.5%) and ‘non-durable consumer goods’ (+5.8%) increased the most y-o-y.
Construction work prices were higher by 4.4% (+4.3% in October); construction material input prices grew by 3.8% (+5.0% in October)
Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 1.9% in total (+2.0% in October). Prices of ‘real estate, renting and business services’ grew by 2.8% (prices of advertising services up by 6.9%) and prices of ‘freight transport and storage services’ by 3.5%. Prices of ‘post services and telecommunications’ and ‘insurance’ fell by 1.3% and 0.8%, respectively
Industrial producer prices in the EU – October 2007*
On average for the EU member states (EU27), according to Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices increased by 0.9% in October (+0.5% in September) month-on-month. Among member states for which data are available, the highest increases were registered in Denmark (+4.9%), Lithuania (+2.5%) and the United Kingdom (+2.2%), and the lowest ones in Slovakia, Portugal and Luxembourg (all +0.3%), in Germany and in Italy (0.2% both). M-o-m price decrease was recorded in none of the countries.
Year-on-year, prices in the EU27 were higher by 3.5% in October (+2.9% in September). The highest increases were observed in Lithuania (+12.7%), Bulgaria (+11.3%) and the Netherlands (+6.9%), the lowest increases in Slovakia (+1.8%), Germany and Finland (+1.7% both). Y-o-y price decrease was registered in none of the countries.

Except the construction work price indices, the data published are final. The construction work price indices are refined using the finished quarterly survey and final data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
