Industrial producer prices stagnating year-on-year

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were stable in total. Increases were reported for the prices of cereals (+1.2%) and poultry (+1.0%), as well as eggs, vegetables and fruit. On the other hand, prices of potatoes (-10.0%), hops (-3.1%), pigs (-2.3%) and cattle for slaughter (-0.9%) decreased.

Industrial producer prices fell by 0.3%. They went down mainly in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (-4.1%). A slight drop of prices continued in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 0.2% (in particular the prices of prepared animal feeds, meat and meat products and beverages were down). Conversely, moderate price increases were recorded for ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+0.2%), ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (+0.4%) and ‘electrical and optical equipment’ (+0.2%).

Prices of construction work grew by 0.1% and prices of construction material inputs remained unchanged.

Prices of market services in the business sphere fell by 0.3% in total due to lower prices of ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ (-0.5%). The prices of ‘national freight transportation services’ (freight transport by road) and ‘post and telecommunication services’ (end of a temporary decrease in SMS price) increased by 0.4% and 0.5%, respectively.


Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were lower by 6.0% (-6.3% in October). The prices of crop products fell by 10.0% due to lower prices of hops (-10.0%), cereals (-13.0%, particularly wheat) and potatoes (-19.3%). The prices of vegetables were higher by 31.7% and of fruit by 17.0%. The prices of animal products decreased by 3.9%; prices of eggs, poultry and pigs were lower by 4.8%, 4.9% and 10.7%, respectively. Prices of cattle for slaughter were 5.1% up.

Industrial producer prices remained unchanged year-on-year in total (+0,3% in October). For twelve consecutive months, the intensity of the price growth slowed down until November when the overall price level was the same as in November 2004. In the reference month, price growth moderated in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ to 9.4% (from 11.3% in October). Further, decreases were slightly higher in the prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ to 2.8% (from 2.6% in October) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ to 4.8% (from 4.7% in October). Also the fall strengthened in the prices of ‘other manufactured goods n.e.c.’ to 5.3% from 3.5% in October (due to lower prices of metal secondary raw materials). The prices of ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ grew by 7.3%, just like in October.
Among the main industrial groupings, the prices of ‘energy’ (+7.4%) and ‘consumer durables’ (+1.3%) grew most. On the other hand, particularly prices of ‘intermediate goods’ dropped (-3,8%).

Prices of construction work were higher by 2.6% (like in October) and prices of construction material inputs decreased by 0.5% (-0.3% in October).

Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 2.3% in total (+2.8% in October), responding to higher prices in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ by 2.0% (price increases in ‘advertising services’, ‘computer and related services’ and ‘exhibition, fair and congress organisation services’) and ‘post and telecommunication services’ by 3.5% (especially higher prices of ‘postal services’). Prices were also higher in ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’ and in ‘national freight transportation services’.


Industrial producer prices in the EU – October 2005*

On average for the EU member states (EU25), according to data published by Eurostat, industrial producer prices were up by 0.6% month-on-month in October 2005. The highest month-on-month increases among member states for which data are available were recorded in the Netherlands (+1.4%), Luxembourg (+1.2%) and Lithuania (+1.1%). Prices in Slovakia increased by 0.5% and in Germany by 0.7%.
In terms of year-on-year comparison, prices in the EU25 grew by 4.7% in total in October 2005, most in Denmark (+10.6%), the United Kingdom (+8.1%), the Netherlands (+7.9%) and Lithuania (+7.3%). Prices in Slovakia were higher by 5.7% and in Germany by 4.6%. Price decreases were observed in none of the EU member states.
