Growth of industrial producer prices stopped after 15 months

Month-on-month comparison:
Agricultural producer prices fell by 0.4%. Decreases were reported for prices of potatoes (-5.1%), pigs for slaughter (-4.3%), cereals (-1.5%) and vegetables (-4.0%). On the other hand, prices of fruit (+4.6%), cattle for slaughter (+2.4%), as well as of milk and eggs, increased.
After a year and a quarter of uninterrupted growth, industrial producer prices stagnated for the first time in November. The overall price level remained unchanged compared to October. This development was decisively influenced by lower prices in ‘coke and refined petroleum products’ (by 2.4%, prices of both coke and petroleum products went down) and a slowdown in the growth of prices of ‘basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (to 0.3% from 0.8% in October).
Prices of construction work and construction material inputs rose by 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively.
Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 0.3%, reflecting growth of prices in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ by 0.5% (higher prices of TV and radio commercials).
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were higher by 5.0% (+1.1% in October). Prices of crop products did not change in total. Drop continued in prices of potatoes (-45.5%), vegetables (-34.1%), fruit (-15.3%) and cereals (-12.6%). On the other hand, higher were prices of hops (+15.6%) and sugar beet (+64.3%). Prices of animal products grew by 7.8% due to price increases in cattle for slaughter (+17.3%) and pigs for slaughter (+15.9%), also milk (+6.0%) and poultry (+3.5%). Prices of eggs were down (-21.1%).
Industrial producer prices were higher by 8.2% (compared to +8.6% in September). Prices of coke, refined petroleum products and food products participated almost evenly in the y-o-y slowdown. Prices in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ were higher by 47.8% (+55.1% in October). Prices in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ went up by 3.8% (+4.3% in October). Decelerating growth was observed particularly for ‘prepared animal feeds’. Prices of ‘basic metals and fabricated metal products’ increased by 29.0% (+29.1% in October).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+13.5%) and ‘intermediate goods’ (+12.2%) grew most y-o-y.
Prices of construction work and construction material inputs were higher by 4.2% (4.3% in October) and 8.2% (+8.3% in October), respectively.
Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 2.0% (+1.7% in October) in total, responding to higher prices in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ (increases in prices of TV and radio commercials and computer-related service activities) and in ‘insurance’ and ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’.
Industrial producer prices in the EU – October 2004 *
On average for the EU member states (EU25), industrial producer prices rose by 0.9% m-o-m in October. The highest m-o-m increases were recorded in United Kingdom (+1.9%), Lithuania (+1.3%), Hungary (+1.2%) and Czech Republic (+1.1%). Germany reported +0.9%. A fall was observed only in Luxembourg (-0.5%).
In terms of y-o-y comparison, prices in the EU25 grew by 4.6% in total, most in Luxembourg (+11.6%), Hungary (+9.2%), Czech Republic (+8.6%), Cyprus (+8.1%) and United Kingdom (+7.0%), least in Finland (+0.4%) and Ireland (+1.0%). Prices below the level of October 2003 were recorded in none of the EU member states.
