Growth of industrial producer prices slowed down

In April 2008, compared to the previous month, prices of agricultural producers and market services grew by 0.7% both; prices of construction work grew by 0.4% and prices of industrial producers remained unchanged.
In comparison to April 2007, prices of agricultural and industrial producers increased by 27.9% and 4.7%, respectively; prices of construction work and market services were up by 4.9% and 4.3%, respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices grew by 0.7% in total. Prices of crop products rose by 1.7% due to higher prices of fruit (+5.4%), oil plants (+2.3%) and cereals (+2.0%). Prices of potatoes and vegetables fell by 0.8% and 5.5%, respectively. Prices of animal products decreased by 0.6%; lower were the prices of eggs (-7.7%), milk (-2.9%) and poultry (-0.4%). Higher prices were recorded for cattle for slaughter (+0.6%) and pigs for slaughter (+6.3%).

Industrial producer prices remained unchanged m-o-m. The price level was the most influenced by higher prices in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ and ‘coal, lignite, peat, crude petroleum’ (+2.1% both). Growth of prices in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ continued (+0.9%). On the other hand, prices went down in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (-1.0%; lower prices of tobacco and dairy products), ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ (-0.6%; switch to summer prices of electricity for high-voltage consumers) and ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres‘ (-0.9%).

Construction work prices rose by 0.4%, prices of construction material input prices by 0.5%.

Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 0.7% due to a 1.2% price rise in ‘real estate, renting and business services’ (prices of advertising services up by 6.2%).


Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were higher by 27.9% (+26.1% in March). Prices of crop products grew by 37.6%, mainly due to higher prices of cereals (+57.4%) and oil plants (+64.8%). Further, the prices of fruit increased by 41.4%. The prices of potatoes and vegetables fell by 40.2% and 9.7%, respectively. Prices of animal products were higher by 16.1%. The prices of milk, eggs and poultry grew by 24.9%, 16.2% and 19.4%, respectively. The prices of pigs for slaughter were higher (+5.6%) for the first time since October 2006. Lower prices were recorded for cattle for slaughter (-2.0%).
Industrial producer prices rose by 4.7% (+5.3% in March). The price level was the most influenced by higher prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 9.3%, of which particularly prices of ‘prepared animal feed’ (+35.9%), ‘dairy products and ice cream’ (+14.7%) and ‘other food products’ (+7.5%). Prices of ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ increased by 9.1% and ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 21.8%. Prices went down y-o-y particularly in ‘transport equipment’ by 3.7%, of which ‘parts and accessories for motor vehicles and their engines’ by 7.4%. Prices of ‘rubber and plastic products’ dropped by 2.4% and ‘wood and products of wood and cork’ by 2.9%.
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+13.5%) and ‘non-durable consumer goods’ (+4.7%) increased the most y-o-y.

Construction work prices were higher by 4.9% (like in March); construction material input prices grew by 2.9% (+ 2.8% in March).

Prices of market services in the business sphere were higher by 4.3% in total (+3.7% in March). Prices of ‘real estate, renting and business services’ increased by 6.1% (prices of advertising services up by 14,0%). Prices of ‘freight transport and storage services’ and ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’ increased by 2.3% both. Prices in ‘post and telecommunications’ grew by 2.2%.


Industrial producer prices in the EU – March 2008*

According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in the EU27 grew by 0.6% in March month-on-month (+0.7% in February). Among member states, for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (+2.7%), Romania (+1.6%) and in Luxembourg (+1.3%). Prices increased in Germany by 0.7% and in Slovakia by 0.1%. Price decreases were observed in Denmark (-0.2%) and Sweden (-0.1%).

Year-on-year, prices in the EU27 were higher by 6.7% in March (+6.3% in February), the most in Lithuania (+17.6%), Bulgaria (+15.4%) and Romania (+14.5%) and the least in Germany (+4.2%), Finland (+4.7%) and Ireland (+5.0%). Slovakia recorded a 5.2% increase.

Except for the construction work price indices, the data are final. The construction work price indices are refined using the finished quarterly survey and the final data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
