Prices of petroleum products increasing, prices of plant products still low

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices fell by 0.8%. Decreases were recorded for prices of fruit (-4.2%), eggs (-3.6%) and potatoes (-2.3%). Also prices of cereals, pigs for slaughter and poultry fell. On the other hand, prices of vegetables (+5.0%) and cattle for slaughter (+1.9%) grew.

Industrial producer prices rose by 0.1% (as against +0.2% in March). Increases were recorded mainly for ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+6.7%) and ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (+0.7%). On the other hand, slowing impact on the total price level had lower prices in ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and hot water’ by 0.8% (prices of ‘production and distribution services of electricity’ dropped by 1.4% due to summer prices of electricity for major consumers). At the same time, prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ went down by 0.4% (prices dropped in most groups of food products). A very slight price decrease was recorded for ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (-0.2%).

Prices of construction work grew by 0.2% and prices of construction material inputs dropped by 0.5%.

Market services prices in the business sphere increased by 0.4%, due to a 0.5% growth of prices in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ (higher prices of TV and radio commercials). Also prices in ‘national goods transport’ grew (+0.4%).


Year-on-year comparison:

The decrease in agricultural producer prices kept on, prices were lower by 17.6% (-15.3 in March). Crop product prices were lower by 44.8% in total, which is the biggest y-o-y drop since 1992. Decreases continued in prices of potatoes (-70.3%), vegetables (-52.7%), fruit (-18.4%) and cereals (-34.4%, particularly wheat). The total growth of animal product prices decelerated and prices were higher by 4.1% (+8.1% in March). Prices of cattle for slaughter (+21.1%), pigs for slaughter (+6.6%) and milk (+6.0%) were up, prices of eggs fell (-31.1%).

The growth of industrial producer prices slowed down to 5.6% (from 6.4% in March). The
y-o-y growth rate was slowing down in the sixth successive month. Particularly the rise of prices in ‘basic metals and fabricated metal products’ reduced to 17.4% (from 24.2% in March). Prices of ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ were higher by 30.0% (+30.8% in March), prices of ‘coal and lignite, peat’ by 23.3% and prices of ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and hot water’ by 7.5%. The y-o-y growth of prices in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ was the same as in March (+0.5%).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+14.0%) and ‘intermediate goods’ (+5.3%) grew most.

Prices of construction work were higher by 3.6% (+4.1% in March) and prices of construction material inputs increased by 5.6% (+7.7% in March).

Market services prices in the business sphere grew by 1.3% (+1.2% in March) in total, responding to higher prices in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ (increases in prices of advertising services and computer-related service activities) and in ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’.


Industrial producer prices in the EU – March 2005*

On average for the EU member states (EU25) by results of Eurostat, industrial producer prices were up by 0.7% m-o-m . The highest m-o-m increases among member states for which data are available were recorded in Denmark (+3.4%), Greece (+1.7%), the Netherlands and Lithuania (both +1.1%) and Portugal (+1.0%). Prices in Germany and Slovakia were higher by 0.6% both. Prices were down only in Belgium (-0.1%).
In terms of y-o-y comparison, prices in the EU25 grew by 5.2% in total, most in the United Kingdom (+9.8%), Denmark (+8.8%), Luxembourg (+6.9%), the Czech Republic and Cyprus (both +6.4%). Prices in Germany were higher by 4.2%, in Slovakia by 2.6%.

The data are final, except for the price indices of construction work. The price indices of construction work will be updated, using results of the completed quarterly survey, and final data will be released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
