The biggest y-o-y price drop in industry since 1991

In September 2009, compared with the previous month, industrial producer prices, agricultural producer prices and construction work prices dropped by 3.3%, 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively. Prices of market services increased by 1.0%.
In comparison to September 2008, agricultural and industrial producer prices were lower by 21.2% and 5.4%, respectively. Construction work prices increased by 0.2% and market services prices were 1.1% up.

Monthly changes

Agricultural producer prices decreased by 3.3% in total. Prices of crop products fell by 5.8% due to lower prices of fruit (-16.7%) and potatoes (-12.4%). Prices of oil plants dropped by 8.7% and prices of cereals by 4.8%. Prices of animal products decreased by 0.6%, lower were prices of pigs for slaughter (-1.6%), and eggs (-4.8%).

Industrial producer prices went down by 0.4% (in August they were 0.2% up). Prices decreased primarily in ‘chemicals, chemical products’ (-4.7%), ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (-1.5%), transport equipment' (-0.9%) and in ‘food, beverages and tobacco’ (-0.4%). A growth was reported for prices in ‘mining and quarrying’ (+2.1%) and in 'electrical equipment' (+0.6%).

Construction work prices decreased by 0.2% and construction material input prices dropped by 0.3%.

Market services prices in the business sphere recorded an increase by 1.0% after three months due to growing prices in advertising and market research services (+11.8%).

Annual changes

Agricultural producer prices were down by 21.2% (-23.5% in August 2009). Prices of crop products fell by 27.6%, mainly due to price decreases in oil plants (-34.2%) and cereals (-33.9%). On the decrease were prices of fruit (-27.8%), vegetables (-10.8%) and potatoes (-3.6%). Prices of animal products dropped by 13.7%. Decreases were registered for prices of milk (-25.8%), poultry (-7.0%) and pigs for slaughter (-5.4%).

Industrial producer prices went down by 5.4% (-5.1% in August). This is the seventh biggest annual fall in a row from the beginning of the observation (year 1991). The most marked influence on the fall of the total index had a price decrease in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ by 20.2% (-19.1% in August), ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 30.9% (-31.2% in August) and ‘food, beverages and tobacco’ by 5.7% (-5.6% in August). Growing were primarily prices in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ (+10.9%), ‘water supply’ (+6.9%).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘intermediate goods’ (-11.3%) recorded the biggest decrease; the highest increase was recorded for ‘durable consumer goods’ (+1.3%).

Construction work prices increased by 0.2% (+0.5% in August). This is the lowest price growth since 1995 when the survey started. Construction material input prices were down by 6.5 (-6.4% in August).

Market services prices in the business sphere rose in total by 1.1% (+1.2% in August), reflecting especially the price growth in advertising and market research services (+8.9%), computer programming, consultancy (+7.0%), and office administrative and other support services (+5.0%). In contrast, prices in telecommunications and freight transport dropped by 2.7% and 6.7%, respectively.

Industrial producer prices in the EU – August 2009*

According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in the EU27 went up by 0.2% in August (-0.6% in July) month-on-month. Among the member states, for which data are available, the biggest increases were recorded in Greece (+1.6%), in Finland and the United Kingdom (both +1.0%). In Germany prices went up by 0.4%. The biggest price drops were recorded in Lithuania (-0.7%), Ireland (-0.6%) and in Bulgaria (-0.3%). In Slovakia prices decreased by 0.2%.

EU27 producer prices were down by 7.1% in August (-8.0% in July) year-on-year. The biggest price decreases were reported for the Netherlands (-13.3%), Lithuania (-12.0%) and in Denmark (-10.8%). Prices went down in Germany (-6.8%) and in Slovakia (-4.7%). The biggest price drop was reported for Hungary (-0.8%), Romania (-1.0%) and in Sweden (-1.4%). Price increase was registered only in Malta (+0.6%).

As from January 2009, the industrial producer price index and the market services price index are compiled, calculated and disseminated in accordance with the classifications CZ-NACE Rev. 2 and CZ-CPA 2008. In comparison to CZ-CPA 2002, the most important changes concern industry (Sections B, C and D). The changes apply to all breakdown levels and the substantial changes at the level of subsections are set out in Table 4. The price indices are recalculated back to 1991; the market services price indices back to 1994.
