Moderate acceleration of producer prices

In March 2007, compared to the previous month, prices of agricultural producers, industrial producers, construction work and market services grew by 2.0%, 0.5%, 0.6% and 1.1%, respectively.
In comparison to March 2006, prices of agricultural producers, industrial producers, construction work and market services were higher by 15.0%, 3.6%, 3.7% and 1.8%, respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices grew by 2.0% (+0.6% in February). The prices of crop products grew by 4.2% due to higher prices of vegetables (+10.5%) and potatoes (+6.1%). Also the prices of fruit and cereals increased. The prices of animal products fell by 0.5%; prices of pigs for slaughter dropped by 4.7%. The prices of poultry and eggs increased by 1.9% and 1.0%, respectively.

Prices of industrial producers increased by 0.5% and the same rate of growth was recorded in February 2007. Prices for ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ showed the largest accrual (+5.2%) and so did the prices for ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (+1.4%). In contrast, the most significant decline was recorded in the prices for ‘metal ores and other mining and quarrying products’ (-0.7%), ‘transport equipment’ (-0.4%) and ‘coal and lignite, peat, crude petroleum’ (-0.2%).

Construction work and construction material input prices grew by 0.6% and 1.0%, respectively (in February identically by 0.2%).

Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 1.1% (+0.7% in February) due to a 1.8% price increase in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ (higher prices of advertising services).

Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were higher by 15.0% (+13.0% in February). The prices of crop products grew by 36.2% due to considerably higher prices of potatoes (+115.8%). Also prices of cereals (+39.1%), oil plants (+16.7%), vegetables (+16.1%) and fruit (+7.7%) went up. The prices of animal products fell by 3.3% and so did the prices of pigs for slaughter (-9.0%) and milk (-3.2%), Prices of poultry advanced by 2.6%.

Prices of industrial producers in March advanced by 3.6% y-o-y (+3.2% in February). This is the largest increase since May 2005. The most significant increase was recorded in prices for ‘basic metals and fabricated metal products’ by 8.6% (+7.9% in February), for ‘wood and products of wood and cork’ by 7.7% (+7.0 in February) and for ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ by 7.5% (like in February). Prices for ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ increased by 1.9% y-o-y (+1.7% in February). Prices went down only for ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 2.9% (-6.9% in February) and ‘transport equipment’ by 0.9% (-0.3% in February).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices for ‘intermediate goods’ showed the most considerable increase (+5.7%) and so did the prices for ‘energy’ (+4.4%)..

Construction work and construction material input prices were up by 3.7% (+3.2% in February) and 4.7% (+4.0% in February), respectively.

Prices for market services in the business sphere were higher by 1.8% in total (+1.5% in February). Prices for ‘real estate, renting and business services’ grew by 2.8% (+6.8% for ‘advertising services’), and so did the prices for ‘national goods transport and warehousing’ (+2.5%).

Industrial producer prices in the EU – February 2007 *

On average for the EU member states (EU27), according to the data released by Eurostat, industrial producer prices increased by 0.2% month-on-month. Among member states for which data are available, prices increased the most in Slovenia (+2.1%), in Slovakia (+1.7%) and in Denmark (+1.2%). Prices in Germany went up by 0.3%. Prices decreased only in the United Kingdom (-0.8%) and in Ireland (-0.4%) m-o-m.

Year-on-year, prices in the EU27 were higher by 2.3%, the most significant increase was recorded repeatedly in Luxembourg (+9.1%), in Hungary (+8.8%) and in Bulgaria (+6.2%). Prices in Slovakia were up by 3.8% and in Germany by 2.8%. The y-o-y decreases were recorded only in Denmark (-2.5%) and in the United Kingdom (-1.4%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the data published are final. The construction work price indices are refined using the finished quarterly survey and final data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
