High oil prices contributed to the growth of industrial producer prices

In June 2008, compared to the previous month, prices of agricultural and market services fell by 0.5% both. Prices of industrial producers and construction work grew by 0.8% and 0.2%, respectively.
In comparison to June 2007, prices of agricultural and industrial producers increased by 25.4% and 5.3%, respectively; prices of construction work and market services were up by 4.9% and 3.9%, respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:
Agricultural producer prices fell by 0.5% in total. Prices of crop products decreased by 0.6% due to lower prices of oil plants (-4.5%), cereals (-3.3%), fruit (-3.0%) and vegetables (-1.2%). The prices of potatoes and hops grew by 32.2% and 20.9%, respectively. Prices of animal products decreased by 0.4%; lower were prices of eggs (-3.3%) and milk (-4.8%). Higher prices were recorded for cattle for slaughter (+0.3%) and pigs for slaughter (+9.6%).
Prices of industrial producers increased by 0.8% m-o-m (+1.0% in May). Prices went up the most significantly in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 5.7% and in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ by 2.3%. Prices in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ rose by 0.4%. Price drop was recorded particularly in ‘transport equipment’ by 2.6%.
Construction work prices rose by 0.2%, prices of construction material input grew by 0.5%.
Prices of market services in the business sphere fell by 0.5%, due to a 0.8% price decrease in ‘real estate, renting and business services’ (prices of radio and TV commercials down by 7.7%).
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were higher by 25.4% (+28.2% in May). Prices of crop products grew by 37.2%, mainly due to higher prices of cereals (+53.1%), oil plants (+66.8%) and hops (+184.0%). The prices of fruit increased by 29.0%. The prices of potatoes and vegetables fell by 40.2% and 9.0%, respectively. Prices of animal products were higher by 10.9%. Prices of poultry, milk, pigs for slaughter and eggs grew by 14.4%, 12.3%, 12.1% and 11.6%, respectively. Lower prices were recorded for cattle for slaughter (-1.2%).
Prices of industrial producers increased by 5.3% (+5.2% in May). The price level was most influenced by prices of ‘coke, refined petroleum products¨(+30.2%) and ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (+8.7%). Prices went up markedly in ‘prepared animal feed’ (+35.8%), ‘grain mill products, starches and starch products’ (+31.7%), ‘animal and vegetable oils and fats’ (+28.9%). Prices of ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ increased by 9.1%. Prices went down particularly in ‘transport equipment’ (-7.0%), in ‘rubber and plastic products’ (-3.7%) and in ‘wood and products of wood and cork’ (-4.6%).
Among the main industrial groupings, the biggest increases were recorded for prices of ‘energy’ (+16.1%) and ‘non-durable consumer goods’ (+4.4%), y-o-y.
Construction work prices were higher by 4.9% (+5.0 in May); construction material input prices grew by 2.0% (+ 2.6% in May).
Prices of market services in the business sphere were higher by 3.9% in total (+4.0% in May). Prices of ‘real estate, renting and business services’ increased by 5.4% (prices of advertising services and architectural and engineering activities up by 9.1% and 10.5%, respectively). Prices of ‘freight transport and storage services’ and ‘post and telecommunication services’ increased by 2.9% and 2.6%, respectively.
Industrial producer prices in the EU – May 2008*
According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in the EU27 grew by 1.3% in May month-on-month (+1.1% in April). Among member states, for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Denmark (+3.0%) and in Greece and the United Kingdom (+1.7% both). Prices in Germany increased by 1.0% and in Slovakia by 0.5%. Prices went down only in Sweden (-0.3%).
Year-on-year, prices in the EU27 were higher by 8.9% in May (+7.9% in April), the biggest increases were recorded in Denmark (+18.4%), the United Kingdom (+16.5%) and Lithuania (+15.1%). The lowest growth was reported for the Czech Republic (+5.2%) and Sweden (+5.7%). Prices in Germany increased by 6.0% and in Slovakia by 6.5%.

Except for the construction work price indices, the data are final. The construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the final data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
