Prices of crop products markedly up

In June 2006, month-on-month, prices of agricultural and industrial producers and construction work grew by 9.1%, 0.2% and 0.7%, respectively. Prices of market services were down by 0.4%.
In terms of year-on-year comparison, producer prices in agriculture were higher by 8.8%, in industry by 1.8%, prices of construction work and market services were up by 2.8% and 3.4%, respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices grew by 9.1%, following higher prices of potatoes (+90.3%), vegetables (+77.9%), fruit (+13.2), and also of pigs, oil plants and cereals. The prices of eggs (-5.4%) and milk (-1.1%) were down.

Prices of industrial producers increased by 0.2%, June being the sixth month of incessant growth. The highest increases were registered for ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (+1.3%), ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+0.8%) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+0.6%). On the other hand, the prices of ‘coal and lignite, peat’ (-0.7%) and ‘transport equipment’ (-0.4%) decreased.

Prices of construction work and construction material inputs rose by 0.7% and 0.1%, respectively.

Prices of market services in the business sphere fell by 0.4%, especially due to a price decrease in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ by 0.8% (lower prices of ‘radio and TV commercials’).


Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were higher by 8.8% (+2.6% in May). The prices of crop products rose by 32.0% due to considerable increases in the prices of potatoes (+150.8%), vegetables (+63.2%), fruit (+26.5%) and cereals (+5.7%). The prices of animal products fell by 2.5%; the prices of poultry (-8.9%) and milk (-4.8%), also of pigs and cattle for slaughter dropped. Only the prices of eggs were up (+4.7%).

Prices of industrial producers increased by 1.8% (+1.5% in May), which is the highest figure over last eleven months. The growth of prices of ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ accelerated to 7.0% (+3.2% in May) and drop in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ slowed down to 1.9% (-3.2% in May). Increase in the prices of ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ decelerated to 16.4% (+18.8% in May). The prices of ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ were up by 8.2% (like in April and May). The prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ have been falling year-on-year for 14 successive months (-2.1% in June).
Among the main industrial groupings, the prices of ‘energy’ grew most (+8.5%). The highest price decrease was reported for ‘non-durable consumer goods’ (-1.0%).

Construction work prices were up by 2.8% (+2.3% in May); construction material input prices decreased by 0.3% (like in May).

Prices of market services in the business sphere were higher by 3.4% (+4.3% in May) in total. The prices of ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ grew (+5.0%; higher prices of ‘advertising services’ by 17.0%, ‘architectural and engineering services’ by 4.4% and ‘exhibition and fair service activities’ by 3.0%), and so did the prices of ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’ (+2.6%).

Industrial producer prices in the EU – May 2006*

On average for the EU member states (EU25), according to the data published by Eurostat, industrial producer prices were up by 0.1% month-on-month in May 2006 (+0.3% in the Czech Republic). Among member states, for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Slovakia (+0.8%), Spain and Italy (+0.7% both) and Hungary (+0.6%). Prices in Germany rose by 0.1%. The highest decreases were recorded in Denmark (-1.6%), Sweden (-0.6%) and in the United Kingdom (-0.5%).

Year-on-year, prices in the EU25 were higher by 6.9% in total, most in the United Kingdom (+12.1%), Slovakia (+9.9%), in the Netherlands (+9.7%) and Greece (+9.3%). Prices in Germany were higher by 6.2%. The lowest increases were recorded in the Czech Republic (+1.5%) and Slovenia (+2.4%). None of the EU member states registered a drop.

Except for construction work price indices, the data published are final. Construction work price indices are refined using the finished quarterly survey and final data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
