January: Industrial producer prices rising again

In terms of month-on-month comparison, January prices of industrial producers, market services and construction work grew by 1.0%, 1.1% and 0.5%, respectively. Agricultural producer prices fell by 2.0%.
Year-on-year, prices of industrial producers, market services and construction work were higher by 0.3%, 3.0% and 2.5%, respectively. Agricultural producer prices fell by 3.0%.

Month-on-month comparison:
Agricultural producer prices fell by 2.0% in January. Price decreases were reported for eggs (-4.1%), pigs for slaughter (-1.2%), also for cattle for slaughter and milk. On the other hand, the prices of potatoes (+6.6%), oil plants (+3.2%) and fruit and vegetables increased.
National industrial producer prices grew by 1.0%. In particular the prices of ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ were higher (+6.7%, of which ‘production and distribution services of electricity’ by 8.3% and ‘steam and hot water supply services’ by 4.4%). The prices of ‘coal and lignite, peat’ went up too (+3.3%). The prices of ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ rose by 1.4% and of ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ by 1.2%. The prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ increased moderately by 0.2%.
Construction work prices rose by 0.5% and construction material inputs prices by 0.4%.
Prices of market services in the business sphere increased by 1.1%, reflecting a 1.3% increase in the prices of ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ (higher prices of nationwide radio commercials and daily press advertisements). Further, price increases were recorded in ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’ (+2.2%, higher prices of banking services) and ‘post and telecommunication services’ (+0.9%, temporary cancellation of the charge for the installation of a residential telephone station was terminated).
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were lower by 3.0% (-5.2% in December). The prices of crop products fell by 2.4% due to lower prices of cereals (-8.3%) and potatoes (-6.9%). The prices of vegetables and fruit were higher by 68.7% and 14.4%, respectively. The prices of animal products fell by 3.2%; prices were down of pigs for slaughter (-7.4%), poultry (-7.3%), eggs (-4.2%) and milk (-1.2%). The prices of cattle for slaughter were up (+4.1%).
Industrial producer prices grew by 0.3% (as against a 0.3% decrease in December). Following the fourteen successive months of decelerating rate of growth, the development trend changed. Higher were mainly the prices of energy resources. They were up by 7.6% year-on-year in ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’, by 15.4% in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ and by 2.7% in ‘coal and lignite, peat’. A significant price increase of 2.5% was recorded for ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’. On the other hand, prices went down in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ by 5.5% and in ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 3.3%.
Among the main industrial groupings, the prices of ‘energy’ (+8.6%) and ‘consumer durables’ (+0.7%) grew most. On the other hand, particularly prices of ‘intermediate goods’ dropped (-3.1%).
Construction work prices were higher by 2.5% (like in December); construction material inputs prices increased by 0.2% (as against a 0.4% drop in December).
Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 3.0% (+1.6% in December) in total, responding to higher prices in ‘real estate, renting and business activities’ (+3.0%, price increases in ‘advertising services’ and ‘computer and related services’), ‘post and telecommunication services’ (+4.5%) and ‘financial intermediation, except insurance and pension funding’ (+2.4%).
Industrial producer prices in the EU – December 2005*
On average for the EU member states (EU25), according to data published by Eurostat, industrial producer prices were up by 0.2% month-on-month in December 2005. Among member states for which data are available, the highest month-on-month increases were recorded in the United Kingdom and Belgium (both +0.8%), and the Netherlands and Greece (both +0.7%). Prices in Germany were up by 0.3%. The highest decreases were recorded in Denmark (-1.5%) and Luxembourg (-1.1%). Prices in Slovakia decreased by 0.6%.
In terms of year-on-year comparison, prices in the EU25 grew by 6.2% in total in December 2005, most in the United Kingdom (+14.8%), Denmark (+10.6%) and the Netherlands (+10.0%). Prices in Slovakia rose by 7.0% and in Germany by 5.2%. The lowest increases were observed in Belgium (+1.5%), Slovenia (+1.8%) and Luxembourg (+1.9). The only decrease was registered in the Czech Republic (-0.3%).
