Producer price indices - August 2008
Growth rate of agricultural producer prices slowed down considerably, y-o-y

In August 2008, compared to the previous month, agricultural producer prices fell by 9.8%. Industrial producer prices and construction work prices both grew by 0.4%. Market services prices remained unchanged.
In comparison to August 2007, agricultural and industrial producer prices increased by 6.3% and 5.7% respectively, construction work prices and market services prices were up by 4.7% and 3.6% respectively.

Month-on-month comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were down by 9.8% in total. Prices of crop products fell by 15.3% due to lower prices of cereals (-19.4%) and oil plants (-10.7%). The prices of potatoes and vegetables dropped by 1.8% and 2.5% respectively. Prices of animal products decreased by 1.7%; prices of milk (-2.9%), poultry (-2.2%) and cattle for slaughter (-1.5%) fell. Higher prices were recorded for eggs (+5.9%).
Industrial producer prices were up by 0.4% (+0.1% in July). The most significant growth was seen in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+3.1%), which is the highest m-o-m increase since August 2004. Significant price increases were registered in ‘chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (+3.1%, the highest figure since April 2000) and ‘transport equipment’ (+1.4%, the first growth after a 13-month decrease). Prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ rose by 0.4%. In particular prices of ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ decreased (-6.1%).
Construction work prices rose by 0.4%, construction material input prices grew by 0.5%.
Market services prices in the business sphere remained unchanged. Prices of ‘real estate, renting and business services’ and ‘freight transport and storage services’ grew by 0.2% and 0.5% respectively. Prices of ‘post and telecommunication services’ fell (-0.8%) due to lower prices of Internet access providers.
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were up by 6.3% (+21.4% in July). Prices of crop products grew by 10.1%, mainly due to higher prices of oil plants (+34.9%). Cereal prices rose by 4.4% (+43.7% in July) and fruit prices by 3.9%. The prices of potatoes and vegetables fell by 4.2% and 18.9% respectively. Prices of animal products grew by 3.0%; on the increase were eggs (+7.3%), poultry (+6.6%) and milk (+3.7%). A price decrease was recorded for cattle for slaughter (-1.7%).
Industrial producer prices rose by 5.7% (+5.2% in July). Prices of ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ were up by 23.8% (+26.8% in July). The price level was significantly influenced also by prices of ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ and ‘electrical energy, gas, steam and water’ (both +9.1%). Prices of ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ were up by 7.5%; price increases were recorded for ‘animal and vegetable oils and fats’ (+32.2%), ‘grain mill products, starches and starch products’ (+29.1%) and ‘prepared animal feed’ (+22.7%). Especially prices of ‘transport equipment’ (-6.2%), ‘wood and products of wood and cork’ (-4.4%) and ‘rubber and plastic products’ (-2.8%) decreased.
Among the main industrial groupings, the highest increases were recorded for prices of ‘energy’ (+14.4%) and ‘intermediate goods’ (+4.9%).
Construction work prices were up by 4.7% (+4.8 in July); construction material input prices grew by 2.3% (+1.8% in July).
Market services prices in the business sphere rose by 3.6% in total (+3.8% in July). Prices of ‘real estate, renting and business services’ increased by 5.0% (prices of advertising services and prices of architectural and engineering activities were up by 6.4% and 10.3% respectively). Prices of ‘freight transport and storage services’ rose by 3.9%.
Industrial producer prices in the EU – July 2008*
According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in the EU27 grew by 0.9% in July (+1.4% in June), month-on-month. Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (+2.9%), the Netherlands (+2.1%) and Germany (+2.0%), the lowest in the Czech Republic (+0.1%) and the United Kingdom (+0.2%). Prices in Slovakia were up by 0.4%. Prices in Ireland remained unchanged.
Year-on-year, prices in the EU27 grew by 11.0% (+10.3% in June). The highest increases were observed in Denmark (+23.2%), the United Kingdom (+20.0%) and Lithuania (+18.9%), the lowest in the Czech Republic (+5.2%), Ireland (+6.1%) and Slovakia (+6.3%). Prices in Germany were up by 8.9%. No decrease was recorded among the EU countries.

Except for the construction work price indices, the data are final. The construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the final data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
