Industrial production decreased, year-on-year, in December

Industrial production decreased in real terms by 3.0%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in December. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 1.6% higher. The value of new orders was on the same level as in December 2023.

Industrial production in December 2024 was in real terms by 1.6% higher, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, it decreased by 3.0%. “The December year-on-year decrease in industrial production was the most influenced by manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers. Mainly an influence of the high comparison basis from the previous year was reflected there. Also manufacture of electrical equipment, especially of components for the automotive sector, decreased,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. A decrease in manufacture of machinery and equipment continued. Food and beverage industry kept growing slightly at the end of 2024. In economic activities that recorded a higher year-on-year growth, the result was partially influenced by fluctuations in the production and by extraordinary billing/invoicing at the end of the year, for example, in repair and installation of machinery and equipment and in manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products.

The value of new orders at current prices in surveyed industrial CZ-NACE activities in December 2024 was at the same level as in December 2023. New non-domestic orders increased by 0.5%, y-o-y, domestic new orders dropped by 1.0%. In the month-on-month comparison, the value of new orders was by 0.2% lower. “A year-on-year decrease in the value of new orders was the most influenced by, similarly as in the case of production, the following industries: manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers and manufacture of electrical equipment. The value of new orders increased, year-on-year, especially in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products,Veronika Doležalová, Head of the Industrial Statistics Unit of the CZSO, adds. In manufacture of machinery and equipment, partial long-term contracts have been concluded.

The average registered number of employees in industry decreased by 2.0%, y-o-y, in December 2024.

According to data released by Eurostat, industrial production in the EU27 decreased by 1.7%, year-on-year, in November 2024. The biggest year-on-year decrease was recorded by Croatia (by 6.6%) and Ireland (by 5.6%). German industry decreased by 3.3%, performance of Czech industry decreased by 2.7%. As for economic activities of industry in the EU27, the biggest decrease was in manufacture of leather and related products (by 12.9%) and the highest increase was recorded by other manufacturing (by 7.8%). According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for December 2024 on 13 February 2025.
