Industrial production decrease continued

Industrial production decreased in real terms by 2.7%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in November. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 1.5% lower. The value of new orders decreased by 1.4%, y-o-y.

Industrial production in November 2024 was in real terms by 1.5% lower, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, it decreased by 2.7%. “In November, industrial production decreased again. The following contributed the most to it: manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, especially of parts thereof, and also a following (related) economic activity of manufacture of rubber and plastic products, i.e., for example, manufacture of rubber tyres. A long-term decrease in manufacture of machinery and equipment further continued,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The following made the highest positive contributions: manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products and other manufacturing, in which extraordinary orders and increased pre-Christmas production were reflected.

The value of new orders at current prices in surveyed industrial CZ-NACE activities decreased by 1.4%, y-o-y, in November 2024. While domestic new orders increased by 3.1%, the influence of non-domestic new orders prevailed – they were by 3.8% lower, year-on-year. The value of new orders decreased, month-on-month, by 1.5%. “A decrease in the value of new industrial orders was the most contributed to by manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers; however, this result was partially influenced by a higher comparison basis. The value of new orders in manufacture of machinery and equipment decreased by a tenth, year-on-year,” Iveta Danišová from the Industrial Statistics Unit of the CZSO says. Also enterprises in manufacture of basic metals had a smaller increase of orders.  

The average registered number of employees in industry decreased by 2.0%, y-o-y, in November 2024.

According to data released by Eurostat, industrial production in the EU27 decreased by 0.8%, year-on-year, in October 2024. The biggest year-on-year decrease was recorded by Belgium (by 7.9%) and Germany (by 4.9%). Performance of Czech industry decreased by 2.1%. The biggest increase was recorded by Irish industry (by 15.2%) and industry of Denmark (by 8.6%). As for economic activities of industry in the EU27, the biggest decrease was in manufacture of leather and related products (by 8.4%) and the highest increase was recorded by other manufacturing (by 7.4%). According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for November 2024 on 15 January 2025.

Notes

November 2024 had the same number of working days as November 2023.
The year-on-year development of all indicators is published after having been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month or quarter-on-quarter rates have also been seasonally adjusted. Contributions to an increase, or to a decrease, have been calculated from data that had been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days.
