Industrial production increased in real terms by 1.2%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in April. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 1.9% lower. The value of new orders increased by 2.7%, y-o-y.

Industrial production in April 2023 was in real terms by 1.9% lower, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, it increased by 1.2%. “The same as in the previous months, the April result of industry was mainly influenced by last year’s low comparison basis in manufacture of motor vehicles. However, the number of economic activities of industry in which production increased, year-on-year, decreased again,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers increased by 30% in the year-on-year comparison; however, in the month-on-month comparison it was by 5% lower. Compared to April 2022, production also increased in manufacture of electrical equipment (mainly that related to the automotive industry), in repair and installation of machinery and equipment, and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations, in which, however, a lower comparison basis was reflected, too. In absolute majority of economic activities of industry production decreased. “Production continued to decrease especially in manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products, in manufacture of basic metals, and in chemical industry. Month-on-month, production of most of economic activities (industries) rather stagnated,” Veronika Doležalová, Head of the Industrial Statistics Unit of the CZSO, adds.

The value of new orders at current prices in surveyed industrial CZ-NACE activities increased by 2.7%, y-o-y, in April 2023. Non-domestic new orders decreased by 1.6%, y-o-y; domestic new orders increased by 11.3%. The value of new orders in industry remained unchanged, month-on-month. The same as production, also the year-on-year comparison was mainly influenced by a low comparison basis of the last year in the automotive industry; in this industry, the lowest increase in orders of the whole year was in April 2022. The same influence was also reflected in a 16% growth of the value of new orders in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations. The value of new orders decreased by almost a quarter in manufacture of basic metals and in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products.

The average registered number of employees in industry decreased by 1.7%, y-o-y, in April 2023. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 9.6%, y-o-y, in April 2023.

According to data released by Eurostat, industrial production in the EU27 decreased by 1.3%, year-on-year, in March 2023. The biggest year-on-year decrease was recorded by Ireland (by 26.1%) and Lithuania (by 16.6%). On the other hand, Maltese industry increased the most (by 12.5%). Both Czech and German industry increased by 2.9%, y-o-y; performance of Slovak industry increased by 2.6%.
