Industrial production increased in real terms by 2.2%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in March. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 1.7% higher. The value of new orders decreased by 1.7%, y-o-y.
Industrial production in March 2023 was in real terms by 1.7% higher, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, it increased by 2.2%. “The year-on-year increase in production was the most significantly influenced by manufacture of motor vehicles, in which the production increased by 42%, y-o-y, and by over a tenth, month-on-month. Besides the influence of a lower comparison basis, also improvement of supplies of components was reflected in this economic activity (industry). In most of economic activities of industry, however, production decreased, year-on-year,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The highest negative contribution to the development of industrial production came from electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, in which a higher comparison basis from the last year was partly reflected that was influenced by increased production of coal power plants. A decrease also continued in the following economic activities of industry: manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products, chemical industry, manufacture of basic metals, or mining and quarrying, in which production decreased by a fifth, year-on-year.
The value of new orders at current prices in surveyed industrial CZ-NACE activities decreased by 1.7%, y-o-y, in March 2023. Non-domestic new orders decreased by 5.0%, y-o-y; domestic new orders increased by 5.6%. “The value of new orders in industry decreased, month-on-month, already for the sixth successive month. Concurrently, namely for the first time since autumn 2021, the value of new orders decreased also in the year-on-year comparison,” Veronika Doležalová, Head of the Industrial Statistics Unit of the CZSO, says. The value of new orders decreased by over a fifth in manufacture of basic metals; over a tenth it decreased in manufacture of fabricated metal products, and a decrease in demand also continued in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products. A double-digit decrease was also recorded in manufacture of textiles, in which, however, a higher comparison basis was partially reflected.
The average registered number of employees in industry decreased by 1.3%, y-o-y, in March 2023. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 9.3%, y-o-y, in March 2023.
According to data released by Eurostat, industrial production in the EU27 increased by 2.1%, year-on-year, in February 2023. The biggest year-on-year increase was recorded by Ireland (by 25.3%). Czech industry increased by 2.0%, y-o-y; performance of German industry increased by 0.5%. On the other hand, Estonian industry decreased the most (by 7.4%). Slovak industry dropped by 4.7%.
