Industrial production dropped by 7.2%, construction was 0.1% up, y-o-y

In October 2009 seasonally adjusted industrial production increased by 1.0% compared with September 2009. Industrial production fell by 7.2% compared with October 2008.
In October 2009 seasonally adjusted construction output decreased by 3.0% compared with September 2009. Construction output increased by 0.1% compared with October 2008.

Industry

In October 2009 industrial production declined by 7.2% compared with October 2008. Working days adjusted the industrial production dropped by 4.9%. October 2009 had one working day less compared with October 2008. Seasonally adjusted (plus WDA) the industrial production was 1.0% up compared to September 2009. The annual decline in industrial production was most contributed to by manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution –2.4 p.p., drop by 25.5%), manufacture of metal structures and fabricated metal products (contribution –1.6 p.p., drop by 17.4%) and manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products (contribution –1.3 p.p., drop by 19.7%). Industrial production grew in manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution +1.8 p.p. growth by 12.4%), manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco (contribution +0.2 p.p., growth by 5.0%) and in mining of coal and lignite (contribution +0.2 p.p., growth by 5.3%).

Revenues from industrial activity at current prices fell by 11.4% compared with October 2008. Direct export revenues of industrial enterprises at current prices decreased by 8.2%. Their share in total revenues of industrial enterprises made up 48.4%.

The value of new orders in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities declined by 11.2% compared with October 2008 (non-domestic new orders fell by 5.1%). The y-o-y drop of total new orders was most contributed to by manufacture of metal structures and fabricated metal products (contribution –5.6 p.p., drop by 32.8%), manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution –3.7 p.p., drop by 29.0%) and manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products; casting of metals (contribution –3.3%, drop by 36.6%). New orders grew only in manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution +4.2 p.p., growth by 16.8%) and manufacture of other transport equipment (contribution +0.2 p.p., growth by 18.5%).

The average registered number of employees in enterprises with 50 or more employees decreased by 12.1% compared with October 2008. Their average monthly nominal wage rose by 3.4% compared with October 2008 and reached CZK 24 265.

Construction

In October 2009 construction output increased by 0.1% at constant prices compared with October 2008, working days adjusted construction output raised by 1.4%. October 2009 had one working day less compared to October 2008. Seasonally adjusted construction output was 3.0% down in October, m-o-m. Building construction output continued decreasing (contribution –4.7 p.p., drop by 7.0%) and civil engineering output growing (contribution +4.8 p.p., growth by 14.7%).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50 or more employees dropped by 0.5% compared with October 2008. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 0.1% compared with October 2008 and reached CZK 27 150.

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA industrial production in the EU 27 declined by 12.1% in September 2009, compared with September 2008. The data for October 2009 will be released by Eurostat at 11:00 a.m. on 14 December 2009.

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA construction output in the EU 27 dropped by 9.4% in September 2009 compared with September 2008. Building construction fell by 12.6% and civil engineering increased by 4.7%. The data for October 2009 will be released by Eurostat at 11:00 a.m. on 17 December 2009.
