Decline in industry and construction slightly slower

In March 2009 seasonally adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.2% compared with February 2009. Industrial production fell by 17.0% compared with March 2008.
In March 2009 seasonally adjusted construction output grew by 0.1% compared with February 2009. Construction output fell by 9.4% compared with March 2008.

Industry

In March 2009 industrial production declined by 17.0% compared with March 2008, working day adjusted industrial production fell by 19.0%. March 2009 was by 2 working days longer than March 2008. Seasonally adjusted (SA) and working day adjusted (WDA) industrial production decreased by 0.2% compared with February 2009. The annual decline in industrial production was most contributed to by manufacture of fabricated metal products (contribution -2.9 p.p., drop by 32.1%), manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution -2.4 p.p., drop by 26.1%), manufacture of basic metals (contribution -2.2 p.p., drop by 45.8%) and manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution -2.2 p.p., drop by 14.3%). The highest growth of industrial production was recorded in manufacture of other transport equipment (contribution 0.3 p.p., growth by 26.7%).
 
Revenues from industrial activity at current prices fell by 14.2% compared with March 2008. Direct export revenues of industrial enterprises at current prices decreased by 14.0%. Their share in total revenues of industrial enterprises made up 48.6%.
 
The value of new orders in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities declined by 16.5% compared with March 2008 (non-domestic new orders fell by 15.2%). The largest decreases of new orders in total were recorded in the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of basic metals (contribution -4.9 p.p., drop by 48.5%), manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution -3.9 p.p., drop by 27.9%) and manufacture of fabricated metal products (contribution -3.0 p.p., drop by 23.5%). The highest increases of new orders were registered in the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (contribution 0.5 p.p., growth by 42.9%) and manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (contribution 0.5 p.p., growth by 3.9%).
 
The average registered number of employees in industrial enterprises with 50 or more employees decreased by 9.9% compared with March 2008. Their average monthly nominal wage rose by 2.5% in comparison with March 2008 and reached CZK 23 370.

Construction

In March 2009 construction output fell by 9.4% at constant prices compared with March 2008, working day adjusted construction output dropped by 11.9%. Seasonally adjusted construction output increased by 0.1% compared with February 2009. Like in the previous months building construction output continued decreasing (contribution ‑11.2 p.p., drop by 14.2%) and civil engineering output growing (contribution 1.8 p.p., growth by 8.3%).
 
The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50 or more employees increased by 0.5% compared with March 2008. Their average monthly nominal wage fell* by 11.3% compared with March 2008 and reached CZK 26 041.

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA industrial production in the EU 27 declined by 17.5% in February 2009, compared with February 2008. The data for March 2009 will be released by Eurostat at 11:00 on 13 May 2009.
 
According to the Eurostat news release, WDA construction output in the EU 27 dropped by 11.2% in February 2009, compared with February 2008. Building construction fell by 12.2% and civil engineering dropped by 8.2%. The data for March 2009 will be released by Eurostat at 11:00 on 19 May 2009.

Industry in the first quarter of 2009: annual changes

In Q1 2009 industrial production fell by 21.0% compared with Q1 2008. The annual fall in industrial production was most contributed to by manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution ‑4.2 p.p., drop by 26.2%), manufacture of fabricated metal products (contribution -3.1 p.p., drop by 34.6%) and manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution -2.5 p.p., drop by 28.4%). Growth of industrial production was registered in manufacture of other transport equipment (contribution 0.1 p.p., growth by 9.7%).
 
Revenues from industrial activity at current prices fell by 18.5%. Direct export revenues of industrial enterprises at current prices declined by 21.6%.
 
The average registered number of employees in industrial enterprises with 50 or more employees decreased by 7.6%. Their average monthly nominal wage rose by 1.3% 2008 and reached CZK 22 576.
 
New orders in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities fell by 22.7%. Non-domestic new orders in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities declined by 22.0%.

Construction in the first quarter of 2009: annual changes

In Q1 2009 construction output at constant prices decreased by 11.5% compared with Q1 2008. Civil engineering output rose by 8.7% and building construction fell by 16.5%.
 
The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50 or more employees grew by 0.1%. Their average monthly nominal wage fell* by 2.6% and reached CZK 24 372.

*The high fall in the average wage in March 2009 and the fall in Q1 2009 in construction were due to the high comparative basis of March 2008 when unusually high bonuses were paid. Adjusted for effects of these bonuses, the average wage grew by 4.8% in March 2009 and by 3.7% in Q1 2009.
