In January 2009 seasonally adjusted industrial production was down by 2.9% m-o-m and down by 23.3% y-o-y.
In January 2009 seasonally adjusted construction output was down by 0.4% m-o-m and down by 11.1% y-o-y.

Industry

In January 2009 industrial production declined by 23.3% y-o-y, working day adjusted industrial production fell by 21.5%. There was one working day less in January 2009 compared with January 2008. Seasonally adjusted (SA) and working day adjusted (WDA) industrial production fell by 2.9% m-o-m. The year-on-year drop of industrial production was most contributed to by manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers incl. contracted works (contribution -0.6 p.p., drop by 36.1%), manufacture of fabricated metal products incl. contracted works (contribution -3.4 p.p., drop by 37.8%) and manufacture of machinery and equipment incl. related services and works (contribution -2.4 p.p., drop by 29.0%).

Revenues from industrial activity at current prices dropped by 21.1% y-o-y. Direct export revenues of industrial enterprises decreased by 26.9% at current prices. Their share in total revenues of industrial enterprises made up 42.3%.

The year-on-year index of new orders totalled 73.4%, of which non-domestic new orders made up 72.9%. The biggest drop of new orders in total was recorded in the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers incl. contracted works (contribution -10.4 p.p., drop by 36.0%), manufacture of fabricated metal products incl. contracted works (contribution -6.5 p.p., drop by 40.0%) and manufacture of machinery and equipment incl. related services and works (contribution -4.7 p.p., drop by 37.2%). New orders increased only in the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of other transport equipment incl. related services and works (contribution 0.7 p.p., growth by 87.5%), manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products incl. related services and works (contribution 0.6 p.p., growth by 5.6%) and manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations incl. contracted works (contribution 0.2 p.p., growth by 17.9%).

The average registered number of employees in enterprises with 50 or more employees in industry decreased by 5.8% y-o-y. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 2.0% y-o-y and reached CZK 23 020.

Construction

In January 2009 construction output was down by 11.1% y-o-y at constant prices, working day adjusted construction output fell by 10.0%. Seasonally adjusted construction output decreased by 0.4% m-o-m. The y-o-y fall in construction output was affected by not quite favourable weather conditions (the average daily temperature in January 2009 was by 5°C lower compared to January 2008). Like in the previous months building construction output continued decreasing (-16.4%*) and civil engineering output growing (+14.2%).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50 or more employees increased by 0.1% y-o-y. Their average monthly nominal wage grew by 3.7% y-o-y and reached CZK 24 152.

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA industrial production in the EU 27 declined by 16.3% y-o-y in January 2009.

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA construction output in the EU 27 dropped by 6.7% y-o-y in December 2008. Building construction fell by 7.7% and civil engineering dropped by 1.3%. Data for January 2009 are to be released by Eurostat at 11:00 on 23 March 2009.

*Note: There was a misprint in the text of the news release. The correct figure for building construction output is a decrease of 16.4%, not 6.4%. The figure in the table and in the time series remains unchanged. Thank you for your understanding.
