Industry

In February 2009 industrial production declined by 23.4% y-o-y, working day adjusted industrial production fell by 20.3%. In comparison to February 2008, February 2009 was by one working day and one calendar day shorter. Seasonally adjusted (SA) and working day adjusted (WDA) industrial production decreased by 0.2% m-o-m. The y-o-y fall in industrial production was most contributed to by manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers incl. contracted works (contribution -4.8 p.p., drop by 27.9%), manufacture of fabricated metal products incl. contracted works (contribution -3.2 p.p., drop by 35.8%) and manufacture of machinery and equipment incl. related services and works (contribution -2.8 p.p., drop by 30.8%). Growth of industrial production was recorded in manufacture of other transport equipment incl. related services and works (contribution 0.1 p.p., growth by 9.1%).

Revenues from industrial activity at current prices fell by 20.6% y-o-y. Direct export revenues of industrial enterprises at current prices decreased by 24.2%. Their share in total revenues of industrial enterprises made up 47.3%.

The value of new orders in selected CZ-NACE activities declined by 24.7% y-o-y (non-domestic new orders fell by 23.5%). The largest decreases of new orders in total were recorded in the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers incl. contracted works (contribution -6.7 p.p., drop by 23.3%), manufacture of machinery and equipment incl. related services and works (contribution -4.6 p.p., drop by 34.0%) and manufacture of basic metals (contribution -4.5 p.p., drop by 44.4%). The highest increases of new orders were registered in the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of other transport equipment incl. related services and works (contribution 1.0 p.p., growth by 141.0%) and manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations incl. contracted works (contribution 0.3 p.p., growth by 26.1%).

The average registered number of employees in enterprises with 50 or more employees in industry decreased by 7.3% y-o-y. Their average monthly nominal wage rose by 0.4% y-o-y and reached CZK 21 600.

Construction

In February 2009 construction output declined by 14.3% y-o-y at constant prices, working day adjusted construction output fell by 13.2%. Seasonally adjusted construction output decreased by 1.9% m-o-m. The y-o-y fall in construction output was affected by not quite favourable weather conditions (the average daily temperature in February 2009 was by 3.3°C lower compared to February 2008). Like in the previous months building construction output continued decreasing (contribution -15.4 p.p., drop by 19.5%) and civil engineering output growing (contribution 1.1 p.p., growth by 5.3%).
The slowdown of growth of civil engineering output resulted from the unusually high comparative basis of February 2008 (civil engineering output grew by 32.7% in February 200, financially demanding road and highway projects were in full swing due to favourable weather conditions).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50 or more employees decreased by 0.2% y-o-y. Their average monthly nominal wage grew by 2.4% y-o-y and reached CZK 22 899.
