Industry

In April 2009 industrial production declined by 22.1% compared with April 2008, which was due to a high comparative basis of the previous year. Working day adjusted the industrial production dropped by 19.2%. April 2009, which hosted Ester this year, had 1 working day less than April 2008. Seasonally adjusted (SA) and working day adjusted (WDA) industrial production decreased by 1.4% compared with March 2009. The annual decline in industrial production was most contributed to by manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution -4.3 p.p., drop by 25.5%), manufacture of fabricated metal products (contribution -3.3 p.p., drop by 36.1%), manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution -2.9 p.p., drop by 30.5%). Industrial production grew in manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco (contribution 0.05 p.p., growth by 1.2%) and in manufacture of other transport equipment (contribution 0.03 p.p., growth by 2.7%).

Revenues from industrial activity at current prices fell by 23.1% compared with April 2008. Direct export revenues of industrial enterprises at current prices decreased by 23.6%. Their share in total revenues of industrial enterprises made up 47.5%.

The value of new orders in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities declined by 26.7% compared with April 2008 (non-domestic new orders fell by 26.9%). The largest decreases of new orders in total were recorded in the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (contribution -6.7 p.p., drop by 22.1%), manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (contribution -5.4 p.p., drop by 53.0%) and manufacture of machinery and equipment (contribution -4.8 p.p., drop by 35.5%). The highest increases of new orders were registered in manufacture of other transport equipment (contribution 0.1 p.p., growth by 9.7%).

The average registered number of employees in industrial enterprises with 50 or more employees decreased by 11.1% compared with April 2008. Their average monthly nominal wage rose by 2.3% in comparison with April 2008 and reached CZK 23 604.

In April 2009 construction output increased by 2.1% at constant prices compared with April 2008, working day adjusted construction output increased by 3.2%. Seasonally adjusted construction output increased by 5.2% compared with March 2009. Like in the previous months building construction output continued decreasing (contribution –5.3 p.p., drop by 7.1%) and civil engineering output growing (contribution 7.4 p.p., growth by 29.1%). The growth of civil engineering output was partly contributed to by favourable climatic conditions (in April 2009 the average daily temperature was by 4.2ºC higher compared with April 2008), which enabled to perform outdoor construction works in bigger scope. The growth of construction output came also from additional invoicing for certain bigger constructions especially in the area of transport infrastructure.

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50 or more employees increased by 0.3% compared with April 2008. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 23.7% compared with April 2008 and reached CZK 30 909. In compliance with the calendar of revisions of the CZSO the data revision for individual months of 2008 and for January to March 2009 was carried out. The revision was based on additionally received questionnaires and refined data from the reporting units. In the revision definitive price indices for revaluation of direct exports at constant prices were used. Concurrently, detailed classification of enterprises by prevailing activities according to a new CZ-NACE classification was made and estimates for the non-surveyed part of the reporting units were refined.

Starting from January 2009 the industry and construction figures are in compliance with the new CZ-NACE classification. Exhaustive information on the introduction of this classification including conversion tables is available at:
