The construction output was by 1.0% higher, m-o-m, in March; in the y-o-y comparison, it increased by 5.8%. “The growth of output was driven again by the building construction, which increased by 10.8%, year-on-year. On the other hand, the civil engineering construction was slowing down the output due to a high comparison basis,” Petra Kačírková from the Construction Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The production in the civil engineering construction decreased by 5.8%.
In March, 5 497 building permits were granted and the number increased by 13.4%, y-o-y. The floor area in new building construction decreased by 17.2%, y-o-y. “The year-on-year increase in the number of building permits granted was contributed to by a higher number of permitted constructions of family houses. The floor area in construction of new buildings decreased, y-o-y, due to a lower number of permitted constructions of multi-dwelling buildings,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the CZSO, explains.
In March 2026, construction of 2 979 dwellings started and it decreased by 5.5%, y-o-y. The decrease was the most contributed to by the category of dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings, the number of which dropped by almost a third due to a high comparison basis. On the other hand, the number of dwellings started in family houses increased by over a fifth. The number of completed dwellings amounted to 2 688, which was a year-on-year decrease by 1.2%.
According to Eurostat data, the construction output in the EU27 in February 2026 decreased by 2.0%, year-on-year. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for March 2026 on 21 May 2026.
More detailed information on the development in construction can be found in the supplementary information to the news release on construction.
Notes
The year-on-year development of the construction output (production) is published after having been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month rates are provided for the trend cycle of construction output.
Detailed time series are newly presented primarily via the DataStat application. Current tables in the Public database continue to be updated and fully functional up until the end of operation of the Public database.
Based on changes in the legislation related to the Programme of statistical surveys, data on an approximate value of permitted constructions (for which a building permit is granted) are not available any more.
