More working days, more construction output

In May 2010 seasonally adjusted construction output increased by 7.2%, m-o-m, and by 0.5%, in the year-on-year comparison. The planning and building control authorities granted by 4.0% less building permits, year-on-year. Approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 14.2%, year-on-year. The number of started dwellings fell by 17.9% and completed dwellings dropped by 8.1%.

In May 2010 construction output increased by 0.5% at constant prices, compared with May 2009, working days adjusted construction output fell by 1.9%. May 2010 had two working days more compared to May 2009. Seasonally adjusted construction output was 7.2% up in May, m-o-m. Building construction output increased by 0.5% (contribution +0.3 p.p.) and the civil engineering output registered an increase by 0.6% (contribution +0.2 p.p.).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50+ employees dropped by 4.2% compared with May 2009. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 4.8% compared with May 2009 and reached CZK 26 889.

In May 2010 the number of building permits granted was down by 4.0%, y-o-y, the planning and building control authorities granted 9 695 building permits. 5 297 building permits were granted for new constructions (contribution -2.6 p.p., drop by 4.8%) and 4 398 building permits for changes in completed constructions (contribution -1.4 p.p., drop by 3.1%).

The approximate value of constructions permitted in May 2010 accounted for CZK 40.2 billion and compared to corresponding period in 2009 it grew by 14.2 %. New constructions registered an increase in the approximate value of building permits up to CZK 28.9 billion (contribution +17.4 p.p., growth by 26.9%). Renewals and enhancements should produce constructions worth CZK 11.3 billion (contribution -3.2 p.p., drop by 9.1%). A growth in the approximate value of permitted constructions was a consequence of permission of expensive constructions like transport infrastructure, new constructions for power engineering, and photovoltaic power plants.

The number of dwellings started dropped by 17.9% compared to May 2009 to reach 2 805 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 4.2%, y-o-y, (contribution -2.1 p.p.). The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings dropped by 49.2% (contribution -15.7 p.p.).

The number of completed dwellings dropped by 8.1% compared to May 2009 and reached 2 491 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in family houses dropped by 8.8% (contribution -4.2 p.p.) and in multi-dwelling buildings the number dropped by 8.2% (contribution -3.2 p.p.).

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA construction output in the EU 27 dropped by 4.3% in April 2010 compared with April 2009. Building construction fell by 4.9% and civil engineering fell by 0.8%. The data for May 2010 will be released by Eurostat at 11:00 a.m. on 19 July 2010.
