Year-on-year decrease of construction output continued

The construction output decreased by 6.8%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in May. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 5.1% lower. The approximate value of permitted constructions decreased by 9.2%. The number of started dwellings decreased by 18.2%, y-o-y. The number of completed dwellings decreased by 2.1%, y-o-y.

Construction output decreased by 5.1%, month-on-month. “In May, construction output decreased, compared to April, and in the year-on-year comparison it was by 6.8% lower. Both the civil engineering construction and building construction contributed to that,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The production in building construction decreased by 7.1%, y-o-y, and the civil engineering construction decreased by 6.3%, y-o-y.

The approximate value of constructions for which a building permit was granted in May reached CZK 52.5 billion and in the year-on-year comparison it decreased by 9.2%.

Construction of 2 819 dwellings started and the number decreased across categories by 18.2%. “In May, 2 905 dwellings were completed, which was a year-on-year decrease by 2.1%. Categories of modifications to multi-dwelling buildings and non-residential buildings contributed to the decrease, whereas the number of newly completed family houses and multi-dwelling buildings increased,” Drahomíra Dušková from the Construction Statistics Unit of the CZSO says.

According to Eurostat, construction output in the EU27 in April 2024 decreased by 0.9%, year-on-year. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for May 2024 on 18 July 2024.

The year-on-year development of construction output (production) has been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month rates have also been seasonally adjusted.
