Construction output driven by building construction

The construction output increased by 7.7%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in April. In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 0.6% higher. The number of building permits granted increased by 14.7%. The number of started dwellings increased by 89.7%, y-o-y; the number of completed dwellings decreased by 10.7%, y-o-y.

The construction output was by 0.6% higher, m-o-m, in April. The construction output increased by 7.7%, year-on-year, in April and it was driven by the building construction. The civil engineering construction output continued to keep its high level from the last year,“ Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The production in the building construction increased by 12.1% and civil engineering construction decreased by 0.4%, year-on-year.

In April 2026, 5 889 building permits were granted and the number increased by 14.7%, y-o-y. The floor area in new building construction increased by 40.3%, y-o-y.

In April 2026, construction of 5 100 dwellings started and the number increased by 89.7%, y-o-y. “The high increase in the number of started dwellings in April was, besides family houses, also thanks to granting of building permits to a higher number of large housing complexes mainly in Prague,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the CZSO, explains. The number of completed dwellings amounted to 2 582, which wasyear-on-year decrease by 10.7%.

According to Eurostat data, the construction output in the EU27 in March 2026 decreased by 0.6%, year-on-year. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for April 2026 on 18 June 2026.

Notes

The year-on-year development of the construction output (production) is published after having been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month rates are provided for the trend cycle of construction output.
Detailed time series are newly presented primarily via the DataStat application. Current tables in the Public database continue to be updated and fully functional up until the end of operation of the Public database.
Based on changes in the legislation related to the Programme of statistical surveys, data on an approximate value of permitted constructions (for which a building permit is granted) are not available any more.
