Civil engineering construction dropped markedly

In June 2012 the construction output decreased by 8.4%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 14.4% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions plummeted by 36.3%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings dropped by 17.4%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings soared by 91.9%, y-o-y.

In June 2012 the construction output decreased by 8.4%, y-o-y, in real terms. The seasonally adjusted construction output in June 2012 was by 7.3% lower, y-o-y. June 2012 was by one working day shorter compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in June 2012 was by 1.8%, month-on-month, lower than that of the previous month. The production in building construction decreased by 1.4% (contribution -0.9 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 22.1% (contribution -7.5 p.p.), y-o-y. The construction output from this year beginning to the end of June of this year dropped by 23.7% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 3.9%, y-o-y, in June 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage decreased by 0.6%, y -o-y, and reached CZK 28 032.

In June 2012 the number of building permits granted dropped by 14.4%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 8 686 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 21.5 billion and plummeted by 36.3% compared to the same period of 2011.

The number of dwellings started in June 2012 dropped by 17.4%, y-o-y, and attained 1 934 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 56.0% and in family houses it dropped by 18.9%.

The number of completed dwellings soared by 91.9%, y-o-y, and was 2 454 dwellings in June 2012. The number of completed dwellings rose both in family houses and in multi-dwelling buildings. This rapid growth was partly caused by the low comparison basis of June 2011.

Construction in Q2 2012

In Q2 2012 the construction output decreased by 5.1%, y-o-y, in real terms. The building construction production increased by 0.1% (contribution 0.03 p.p.) and the civil engineering construction production recorded a decline by 15.8% (contribution -5.1 p.p.).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50+ employees dropped by 4.0%, y-o-y in Q2 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage decreased by 0.9%, y-o-y and reached CZK 28 737.

In Q2 2012 the number of building orders of construction enterprises with 50+ employees declined by 32.7%, y-o-y; the enterprises received and concluded 9 839 orders in the Czech Republic. The total value of the orders dropped by 21.5%, y-o-y and was CZK 34.8 billion. The building construction orders were for CZK 18.4 billion (drop by 4.0%) and those for civil engineering constructions were for CZK 16.4 billion (decline by 34.8%). The average value of a newly concluded construction order in Q2 2012 was CZK 3.5 million and was by 16.7% higher, y-o-y.
By the end of Q2 2012 construction enterprises with 50+ employees had 11.5 thousand orders (drop by 18.9%) contracted and these orders represented the stock of so-far not implemented construction works at the total value of CZK 146.4 billion (decline by 14.6%).

In Q2 2012 the number of building permits granted went down by 13.6%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 25 856 building permits. The approximate value of these permitted new constructions was CZK 73.1 billion and decreased by 22.5% compared to the same period of 2011.

The floor area of buildings permitted in Q2 2012 was 1 329.2 thousand m 2, which means a drop by 24.2% compared y-o-y. The floor area of permitted residential buildings decreased by 21.6%, and that of non-residential buildings fell by 26.6%.

The number of dwellings started in Q2 2012 dropped by 21.0%, y-o-y, and attained the number of 6 002 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in family houses dropped year-on-year by 20.1% and in multi-dwelling buildings it plummeted by 43.3%, y-o-y.

The number of completed dwellings jumped up by 26.4%, y-o-y, in Q2 2012 and reached 6 819 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in family houses increased by 6.9%, and the number of those in multi-dwelling buildings rose by 46.8%. This is partly affected by the low comparison basis of Q2 2011.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 6.9%, y-o-y, in May 2012. Building construction fell by 6.3% and civil engineering construction dropped by 10.9%. Eurostat shall release the data for June 2012 on 20 August 2012 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
