Building construction mitigated the drop in construction output

In July 2012 the construction output decreased by 0.5%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 9.0% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions dropped by 10.8%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings fell by 17.0%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings increased by 5.7%, y-o-y.

In July 2012 the construction output decreased by 0.5%, y-o-y, in real terms. The seasonally adjusted construction output in July 2012 was by 1.7% lower, y-o-y. July 2012 was by one working day longer compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in July 2012 was by 1.6%, month-on-month, higher than that of the previous month. The production in building construction increased by 3.9% (contribution +2.6 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and this increase was brought primarily by activities of small construction enterprises. The production of civil engineering construction dropped by 9.6% (contribution -3.1 p.p.), y-o-y. The construction output from this year beginning to the end of July of this year dropped by 22.6% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 4.5%, y-o-y, in July 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 2.8%, y -o-y, and reached CZK 30 915.

In July 2012 the number of building permits granted dropped by 9.0%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 8 335 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 25.5 billion and fell by 10.8% compared to the same period of 2011.

The number of dwellings started in July 2012 dropped by 17.0%, y-o-y, and attained 1 901 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 48.5% and in family houses it dropped by 17.1%.

The number of completed dwellings increased by 5.7%, y-o-y, and was 2 021 dwellings in July 2012. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 37.6%. The number of completed dwellings in family houses jumped up by 48.4%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 5.8%, y-o-y, in June 2012. Building construction fell by 5.6% and civil engineering construction dropped by 9.3%. Eurostat shall release the data for July 2012 on 19 September 2012 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
