Construction output mitigated its decrease

In May 2023, the construction output decreased by 2.7%, year-on-year (y-o-y). In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 1.0% higher. The planning and building control authorities granted by 11.4% less building permits, y-o-y. The approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 16.1%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings decreased by 34.9%, y-o-y. The number of completed dwellings increased by 3.1%, y-o-y.

“In May, construction output increased by 1.0%, compared to April. Year-on-year, it mitigated its decrease and was by 2.7% lower. This decrease was contributed to by both civil engineering construction and building construction,” Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says. The production in building construction decreased by 1.5%. The production of civil engineering construction decreased by 5.8%, y-o-y.

The planning and building control authorities granted 7 088 building permits; it was by 11.4% less, y-o-y. The approximate value of the permitted constructions reached CZK 57.8 billion and compared to the corresponding period of 2022 it increased by 16.1%.

“In May, construction of 3 451 dwellings started, which is by a third less, year-on-year. The decrease is influenced, to a considerable extent, by a high comparison basis. In May 2022, construction of a record-high number of dwellings started,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department of the CZSO, says. The number of dwellings completed increased by 3.1%, y-o-y, and amounted to 2 966 dwellings.   

The average registered number of employees in construction decreased by 0.7%, y-o-y. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 11.3%, y-o-y.

According to Eurostat, construction output in the EU27 in April 2023 decreased by 0.1%, year-on-year. Buildings decreased by 0.9% and civil engineering works increased by 3.9%. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for May 2023 on 19 July 2023.

The year-on-year development of construction output (production) has been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days. Month-on-month rates have also been seasonally adjusted.
