Cold February slowed down construction work
Publication Date: 07. 04. 2005
Product Code: r-8202-05
Seasonally adjusted construction output at constant prices was 0.8% down month-on-month . The trend increased by 0.3 % and the growth rate accelerated moderately (see Table 3).

Year-on-year , total construction output at constant prices increased by 3.8%.
The growth was influenced by unfavourable weather (the average temperature was –3,4 °C, that is 4,1 °C down compared to February 2004 average). In February 2005, manual workers worked by 10 more hours on average than in February 2004 (-7.9 %). The construction output grew mainly due to civil engineering activities on new construction, including the construction of transport infrastructure (highways, underground lines) in particular. The volume of construction work on repairs and maintenance of constructions decreased in the fifth subsequent month already.
The number of employees in construction enterprises with 20+ employed people rose by 4.1%. The average monthly wage of employees increased by 1.3% year-on-year to reach CZK 16 260, while real wage decreased by 0.4%. Average hourly wage increased by 7.4% and amounted to CZK 131. Labour productivity per employee increased by 0.5 % and per hour worked by 6.8 %. Unit wage costs were by 0.7 % up.
Planning and building control authorities granted 8 056 building permits in February (of which 4 004 for new construction and 4 052 for renewals and enhancements). The approximate value of constructions permitted in February was CZK 21.3 billion (of which new constructions accounted for CZK 14.4 billion and renewals and enhancements for CZK 6.9 billion). The high approximate value of constructions permitted in February resulted from building permits granted for more highway constructions on the one hand and from a lower reference basis of February 2004.
The planning and building control authorities permitted 2 671 dwellings to be constructed (an increase of 628 dwellings year-on-year), of which new construction should provide 1 995 dwellings (an increase of 510). The number of new dwellings to be obtained by renewals and enhancements is 676 (an increase of 118). The approximate value of newly permitted dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings reached CZK 4.7 billion. The approximate value per dwelling was CZK 2.1 million for new construction or CZK 1.0 million for renewals and enhancements (extensions of buildings).
