Quarter-on-quarter decrease slowed down, in the year-on-year comparison it remained at 10%

In Q3 2009, seasonally adjusted, calendar and working day adjusted sales in services dropped by 0.5%, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices and by 9.4%, year-on-year. Not seasonally adjusted sales fell by 10.4%, y-o-y, which was partly due to a lower number of working days in 2009 compared to 2008. The biggest sales drop was reported for administrative and support service activities.

In Q3 2009, sales in services1) with seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment decreased by 0.5%, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices and by 9.4%, y-o-y, (Q3 2008 had two working days more). Not seasonally adjusted sales dropped, y-o-y, by 10.4%. The drop came mainly from professional, scientific and administrative activities (-3.1 p.p.) and from transportation and storage (-2.8 p.p.). Sales increase was reported only for postal and courier activities (+4.7%).

Year-on-year development of not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:

- sales in transportation and storage dropped by 9.0%, which was mainly contributed to by land transport and transport via pipelines (drop by 10.0%, contribution 5.3 p.p.) and warehousing and support activities for transportation (drop by 9.0%, contribution 3.1 p.p.). Drought with subsequent worsening of transport conditions contributed to a marked drop of sales in water transport (-44.1%);

- sales in accommodation and food service activities continued to fall (-10.9%) like in the previous quarter. The biggest drop of sales was recorded in accommodation (-14.2%) of which mainly in big hotels with 100+ employees (-18.7%). Sales in food and beverage service activities dropped by 9.0%.

- sales in information and communication were by 6.8% down which was contributed to by all observed groups. Sales in programming and broadcasting activities dropped by 23.8%, in publishing activities by 10.6%, in motion picture activities by 8.1%, in telecommunications by 6.3% and in computer programming, consultancy and related activities by 5.3%. For the first time (i.e. since 2006) a drop in time series of y-o-y sales indices for information service activities including e.g. data processing and web portals was recorded;

- sales in real estate activities dropped by 5.4%. The drop showed both in sales of real estate agencies (-9.3%) and in sales from renting (-3.2%);

- sales in professional, scientific and technical activities2) dropped by 14.0%. The biggest drop was recorded in advertising and market research (-20.9%) and other professional, scientific and technical activities (-19.4%). A double-digit drop of sales was recorded also for architectural and engineering services (-11.9%). Legal and accounting activities continued to fall, however, the fall was not as big as in other activities (-7.2%);

- sales in administrative and support service activities3) fell by 15.2%. Sales of employment placement agencies remained low compared to 2008 (drop by 39.0%). A double-digit fall was reported for tour operator activities (-12.6%) and in administrative and support activities (-14.6%). More moderate drop was reported for cleaning activities and security and investigation activities (-6.7% and -9.6%, respectively). In sub-groups observed in this section growing were only sales from renting and leasing of motor vehicles (+2.4%).

1) For the purpose of New Releases, services include the following CZ-NACE categories – Transportation and storage (H), Accommodation and food service activities (I), Information and communication (J), Real estate activities (L), Professional, scientific and technical activities – without Scientific research and development and Veterinary activities (M without 72 and 75), Administrative and support service activities without Landscape service activities (N without 81.3).
2) For the purpose of News Releases section M – Professional and scientific and technical activities does not include CZ-NACE 72 – Scientific research and development and CZ-NACE 75 – Veterinary activities.
3) For the purpose of New Releases section N – Administrative and support service activities does not include CZ-NACE 81.3 – Landscape service activities.
