Sales in services increased by 8.1% in 2022

In the Q4 2022, sales adjusted for calendar effects increased in real terms by 1.4%, year‑on-year (y-o-y); in the quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) comparison they decreased by 0.8%. For the whole year 2022, sales in services adjusted for calendar effects increased in real terms by 8.1%, year-on-year.   

“Compared to the year 2021, sales in services increased by 8.1%. The highest contribution to the growth was reported by the CZ-NACE section of transportation and storage with a year-on-year increase in sales by 10.6%, mainly warehousing and support activities for transportation with an increase by 11.4% and land transport and transport via pipelines with an increase by 9.1%,” Tomáš Harák, Head of the Services, Trade, and Environmental Statistics Data Support Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

“The second highest contribution to the increase of sales in services was recorded by the section of administrative and support service activities with an increase by 15.1%; within that, travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities increased the most, sales increased there by 120.8% in 2022,” Tomáš Harák adds.

Quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted sales in services1) decreased in real terms by 0.8%, in the Q4. The decrease was caused by lower sales in the CZ-NACE section of transportation and storage; other industries of services (CZ-NACE sections) were stagnating or increasing.

In the year-on-year comparison, sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 1.4% in the Q4 2022. The y-o-y increase was recorded by majority of activities of services (CZ-NACE sections) except for professional, scientific and technical activities.  


Development in individual industries of services (CZ-NACE sections) was as follows:

  • sales in transportation and storage increased by 0.3%. A double-digit growth was recorded by air transport (by 40.3%) and water transport (by 39.7%). In land transport and transport via pipelines, which is the most important as for the volume, sales increased by 3.7%. On the other hand, a year-on-year decrease of sales was recorded by postal and courier activities (by 2.9%) and warehousing and support activities for transportation (by 4.3%);
  • sales in accommodation and food service activities increased by 8.8%. Growth of sales was higher in accommodation (by 20.4%) than in food and beverage service activities (by 5.1%);
  • sales in information and communication increased by 1.7%. The highest year-on-year growth of sales by 6.0% was in computer programming, consultancy and related activities, which include, for example, computer programming activities, computer facilities management activities, and computer consultancy activities. Telecommunications were stagnating (growth by 0.2%). A decrease of sales was reported by information service activities (by 1.6%), publishing activities (by 2.2%), music and motion picture activities (by 6.6%), and programming and broadcasting activities (by 18.2%);
  • sales in real estate activities increased by 3.6%, y-o-y;
  • in professional, scientific and technical activities2) sales decreased by 1.4%. The highest sales decrease was reported by advertising and market research by 9.6%. Other professional, scientific and technical activities, which include, for example, business brokerage activities, translation and photographic activities, or activities of quantity surveyors, decreased by 1.5%, year-on-year, and sales in activities of head offices; management consultancy activities decreased by 1.4%. Sales of legal and accounting activities increased by 0.4%. The highest increase by 2.4% was recorded by  architectural and engineering activities; technical testing and analysis;
  • in administrative and support service activities, sales increased by 5.1%. The highest increase by 52.6% was recorded by travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities. Sales in office administrative, office support and other business support activities increased by 2.4%, sales in security and investigation activities by 1.2%, and sales in services to buildings and landscape activities by 0.4%. On the other hand, a y-o-y decrease of sales was recorded by rental and leasing activities by 3.2% and by employment activities by 4.3%.

Notes:

All data in the text of the News Release are presented at constant prices. The year-on-year development is published after having been adjusted for an influence of the number of working days. Quarter-on-quarter rates have also been seasonally adjusted.
Enterprises are classified to the economic activity according to their principal (prevailing) activity, which is such an activity, from which the enterprise gets the highest value added.
Data for the Q4 2022 are preliminary; final data for individual quarters of 2022 will be released in March 2023.

2) For the purposes of the News Release, section M – Professional, scientific and technical activities does not include CZ-NACE 72 – Scientific research and development and CZ-NACE 75 – Veterinary activities.
