Sales in services decreased by 1.5% in 2011

In Q4 2011, seasonally adjusted sales in services stagnated, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices. After working day adjustment they dropped by 2.2%, year-on-year, without adjustment by 2.6%. The overall development was influenced the most by decrease of sales in services in professional, scientific and technical activities.

For the entire year 2011, sales in services decreased by 1.5%, y-o-y.

In Q4 2011, seasonally adjusted sales in services 1) stagnated, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices. After working day adjustment (in Q4 2010 there was one working day more) they decreased by 2.2%, year-on-year, without adjustment by 2.6%. The overall development was influenced the most by decrease of sales in services in professional, scientific and technical activities.

Year-on-year development of not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:

- sales in transportation and storage increased by 1.1% mainly owing to growth of sales for land transport and transport via pipelines (+1.4%). Sales increased also in air transport (+3.4%) and in warehousing and support activities for transportation (+0.7%). Lower sales (-0.5%) were recorded by postal and courier activities, which, however, in Q4 2010 had double-digit growth of sales. Decrease of sales of water transport continued, this time by 25.9%;

- sales in accommodation and food service activities dropped by 2.4%. The drop was influenced mainly by development in food and beverage service activities, in which a decrease by 6.5% was recorded. On the contrary, in accommodation sales increased by 5.5%;

- sales in information and communication decreased by 1.9%; it was owing to all divisions except for computer programming, consultancy and related activities (growth by 6.0%). The biggest fall of sales was reported by the so-called music and motion picture activities (drop by 18.0%). Decrease of sales occurred also in publishing activities (-9.9%), programming and broadcasting activities (-5.4%), telecommunications (-4.2%), and information service activities (-4.1%), which comprise, for example, activities related to web portals, data processing and hosting;

- sales in real estate activities dropped by 4.7%. Buying and selling of own real estate and renting and operating of own or leased real estate recorded a slight increase (+0.4%); however, sales of real estate activities on a fee or contract basis were further decreasing by 14.2%;

- sales in professional, scientific and technical activities 2) dropped by 9.6%; a decrease was recorded in all of the surveyed divisions. The deepest fall of sales was for activities of head offices; management consultancy activities (-16.0%) and other professional, scientific and technical activities (-14.1%). Sales were further decreasing for architectural and engineering activities (-9.3%) and for advertising and market research (-10.3%); however, compared to Q3 the fall was smaller;

- sales in administrative and support service activities 3) increased by 2.2%. This result was the most contributed to by employment activities (+12.7%) and office administrative, office support and other business support activities (growth by 7.6%). The same as in previous quarters, sales increased also in rental and leasing activities (+0.9%). Decrease was reported by security and investigation activities (-6.9%), travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities (-2.1%), and services to buildings and landscape activities (-0.2%).

Development in the year 2011

In 2011, sales 1) in services decreased by 1.5% , y-o-y. The same as in the Q4 2011, the deepest fall of sales was recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities.

The y-o-y development of not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:

- increase of sales in transportation and storage by 1.2% was contributed to mainly by the most important division in terms of volume - land transport and transport via pipelines, sales of which increased by 2.4%. Growth of sales was recorded also in air transport (+1.6%) and postal and courier activities (+1.7%). Sales in warehousing and support activities for transportation dropped by 0.6%, despite their growth in two quarters. In water transport, a double-digit decrease of sales continued in all quarters;

- in accommodation and food service activities sales recorded a slight increase by 0.6% in 2011, after falling for three years, owing to increase of sales in accommodation by 5.9%. Despite a slight increase in food and beverage service activities in the first half-year, sales dropped in total for the entire year by 2.2%. The fall was recorded already for the fourth year, although it was smaller compared to the previous years;

- sales in information and communication decreased by 1.6%. A decrease was recorded in all surveyed divisions except for computer programming, consultancy and related activities, which reported sales growth in all quarters. The deepest fall of sales was in programming and broadcasting activities by 0.6%. Sales of publishing activities dropped by 5.8%, telecommunications by 5.5%, and information service activities by 4.7%. A double-digit decrease of sales was reported by the so-called music and motion picture activities, which include, for example, music publishing activities, motion picture, video and television programme production and post-production;

- sales in real estate activities decreased by 3.8%. Sales in buying and selling of own real estate and renting and operating of own or leased real estate were by 2.0% lower than in 2010. Sales in real estate activities on a fee or contract basis grew in Q1, then they were gradually decreasing and in the sum for 2011 they decreased by 7.0%;

- sales in professional, scientific and technical activities 2) were by 9.1% down. The same as in 2009 and 2010, all divisions recorded a drop; the biggest fall was in architectural and engineering activities; technical testing and analysis (-11.4%) and in advertising and market research (-10.2%), the smallest decrease was recorded in legal and accounting activities (-0.8%);

- sales in administrative and support service activities 3) increased by 4.3%. In all quarters, sales grew in rental and leasing activities (annual growth by 1.5%), employment activities (+21.3%, y-o-y), and office administrative, office support and other business support activities (+7.4%, y-o-y). Sales of travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities increased by 1.2% compared to 2010. Security and investigation activities reported lower sales (-0.9%) as well as services to buildings and landscape activities (-0.4%).
