Majority of services recorded a drop, the biggest one was reported for employment placement agencies

In Q2 2009, seasonally adjusted, calendar and working days adjusted sales in services dropped by 2.7%, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices and by 9.9%, year-on-year. Not seasonally adjusted sales fell by 10.5%, y-o-y, which was the biggest decrease from the beginning of time series for services in total (i.e. from 2006). In administrative and support service activities the biggest slump was reported for employment placement agencies (-41.5%). However, the total result was most affected by unfavourable development in transportation and storage.

In Q2 2009, sales in services 1) with seasonal, calendar and working days adjustment decreased by 2.7%, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices and by 9.9%, y-o-y, (Q2 2008 had one working day more). Not seasonally adjusted sales dropped, y-o-y, by 10.5%, which was the worst result in time series of the year-on-year sales indices for services in total calculated from 2006. The drop came mainly from transportation and storage (-4.0 p.p.) and professional, scientific and technical activities (-2.7 p.p.). In administrative and support service activities the biggest drop was recorded in employment placement agencies (-41.5%).

Year-on-year development of not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:

- sales in transportation and storage dropped by 12.7%, which was the biggest decrease from the beginning of time series for this division (i.e. from 2001). The drop owed mainly to the development in land transport and transport via pipelines, which is the most important in terms of volume, however, lower sales compared to 2008 were recorded in all transport divisions save for postal and courier activities, where the sales growth (+2.7%) was reported;

- sales in accommodation and food service activities fell by 10.9%, of which in accommodation by 16.6% and in food service activities 7.7%;

- the drop of sales in information and communication (-4.4%) came mainly and almost equally from publishing activities (drop of sales by 10.0%, contribution to the total drop 1.2 p.p.), motion picture activities (drop by 27.1%, contribution by 1.2 p.p.) and telecommunications (contribution 1.1 p.p. given lower sales by only 2.5% compared to the last year). Only services in data processing, hosting and related activities serving for the provision of information recorded a 3.4% growth;

- sales in real estate activities dropped by 2.1% while renting of real estate maintained its modest growth (+0.9%);

- sales in professional, scientific and technical activities 2) dropped by 13.0%. The biggest drop was recorded in advertising and market research (-19.7%) and architectural and engineering services (-12.7%), more slowly were falling legal and accounting activities (-8.6%) and other professional, scientific and technical activities, among which especially special design activities, photographic and translation activities (-7.6%);

- sales in administrative and support service activities 3) fell by 15.1%. The drop of sales was recorded for employment placement agencies (-41.5%). A marked drop was reported also for sales in tour operator activities (-16.9%) and in office administrative and support activities (-12.4%). Companies active in rental and leasing activities recorded sales drop by 7.1%, compared to 2008 and sales in security and investigation activities decreased by 5.9%. The smallest drop recorded cleaning activities and combined facilities support activities (-1.6%).

1) For the purpose of New Releases, services include the following CZ-NACE categories – Transportation and storage (H), Accommodation and food service activities (I), Information and communication (J), Real estate activities (L), Professional, scientific and technical activities – without Scientific research and development and Veterinary activities (M without 72 and 75), Administrative and support service activities without Landscape service activities (N without 81.3).
2) For the purpose of News Releases section M – Professional and scientific and technical activities does not include CZ-NACE 72 – Scientific research and development and CZ-NACE 75 – Veterinary activities.
3) For the purpose of New Releases section N – Administrative and support service activities does not include CZ-NACE 81.3 – Landscape service activities.
