Services recorded a 7.8% drop

In Q1 seasonally adjusted, working and calendar days adjusted sales in services dropped by 3.3%, q-o-q, at constant prices, and by 6.9%, y-o-y. Not seasonally adjusted sales dropped by 7.8%, y-o-y. The biggest decrease was recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities, growing were only sales in real estate activities.

In Q1, seasonally adjusted, working and calendar days adjusted sales in services 1) dropped by 3.3%, q-o-q, at constant prices and by 6.9%, y-o-y (in 2008 there was the same number of working days but in February there was one day more). Not seasonally adjusted sales dropped by 7.8%, y-o-y. The biggest contribution to the drop came from transportation and storage (-3.2 p.p.) and from professional, scientific and technical activities (-2.4 p.p.). The biggest drop was reported for professional, scientific and technical activities; growing were only sales in the real estate activities.

The year-on-year development of not seasonally adjusted sales in individual sections of market services was the following:

- transportation and storage recorded a 10.1% drop, which was most contributed to by land transport and transport via pipeline (-7.9 p.p.) with the sales falling by 14.9%. The biggest drop was recorded in water transport (almost 23%). Due to the lower output of traditional transport divisions sales in warehousing and support activities in transportation dropped, too. Falling were also sales in postal and courier activities, which, according to a new classification, belong to transportation and storage ;

- in accommodation and food service activities the drop, which started in January 2008, continued Q1 2009. Sales decreased by 11.3%, of which in accommodation the drop made 14.3% and in food and beverage service activities 9.9%;

- sales drop in information and communication was most contributed to by publishing activities and motion picture, video and television programme production, sound recording and music publishing activities (-10.4% and -18.6%, respectively). By contrast, telecommunications and information service activities recorded a growth (+2.4% and +5.5%, respectively);

- sales in real estate activities increased by o 3.3% due to sales increase in renting of business premises (+5.8%);

- in professional, scientific and technical activities 2) sales decrease was recorded for all groups: architectural and engineering activities (-17.7%), legal and accounting activities (-5.4%), advertising and market research (-12.9%). Group of activities classified as other professional, scientific and technical activities including e.g. specialized design activities, photographic, translation and interpretation activities recorded a 8.7% drop;

- in administrative and support service activities 3) the drop came mainly from accelerated slump in sales reported for activities of employment placement agencies by 41.1%. Sales reported for security and investigation activities were 1.6% down, sales in tour operator activities dropped by 8.9%. In office administrative and support activities covering e.g. photocopying services, activities of call centres and organisation of conventions and trade shows sales fell by 8.6%. Interest in renting and leasing of mainly motor vehicles recorded a 4.7% decrease for the first time from Q4 2001.

1) For the purpose of New Releases, services include the following CZ-NACE categories – Transportation and storage (H), Accommodation and food service activities (I), Information and communication (J), Real estate activities (L), Professional, scientific and technical activities – without Scientific research and development and Veterinary activities (M without 72 and 75), Administrative and support service activities without Landscape service activities (N without 81.3).
2) For the purpose of News Releases section M – Professional and scientific and technical activities does not include CZ-NACE 72 – Scientific research and development and CZ-NACE 75 – Veterinary activities.
3) For the purpose of New Releases section N – Administrative and support service activities does not include CZ-NACE 81.3 – Landscape service activities.
