Year-on-year decrease of sales in retail trade continued for sixth successive month

Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 9.4%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y) in October; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they decreased by 1.8%.

Sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) decreased by 1.8% in real terms, month‑on‑month, in October. Sales for sale of non-food goods decreased by 2.8% and sales for sale of food by 1.0%, whereas sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 0.6%.

Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 9.4%, year-on-year. Sales for sale of non-food goods decreased by 11.2%, sales for sale of automotive fuel decreased by 8.0%, and sales for sale of food by 7.0%.

“A year-on-year decrease of sales in retail trade also continued in October; the decrease lasted already from May 2022. Compared to the previous month, the decrease rate deepened mainly as for non-food goods, but also in food and automotive fuel,” Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Trade, Transport, and Services Statistics Unit of the CZSO, says.

“A year-on-year decrease was reported by all main assortment types of specialised stores with non-food goods, except for stores selling dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods. Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet continued to decrease already for the tenth successive month,” Marie Boušková, Director of the Trade, Transport, Services, Tourism, and Environmental Statistics Department of the CZSO, adds.

Sales in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores decreased by 15.6%, in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores they decreased by 13.7%, in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores by 12.7%, in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 5.4%, and in retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores by 1.2%. On the other hand, sales in stores with dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods increased by 2.9%. Sales for sale of food decreased in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores by 9.8% and in non‑specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating by 6.8%. In other retail sale in non-specialised stores sales increased by 1.0%. In retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) sales decreased by 13.2%.

Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) decreased in real terms, m-o-m, by 2.1%. In the year-on-year comparison, sales decreased by 3.6%. Sales for repair of motor vehicles decreased by 6.1% and sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) by 3.0%.
