Long-term increase of sale of motor vehicles stopped

In June, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment decreased at constant prices by 0.1%, month-on-month. Only working days adjusted sales decreased by 3.5%, year-on-year, the same as non-adjusted. Y-o-y decrease of sales took place in both: automotive segment and retail trade.

After seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased in June by 0.1%, at constant prices, m-o-m; only working days adjusted decreased by 3.5%, year-on-year, the same drop was recorded by non-adjusted sales. In June 2010 and 2011 there was the same number of working days; the drop was contributed to more by the automotive segment (-2.9 p.p.) than by retail trade (-0.6 p.p.) – see Table 2.

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 0.4% at constant prices, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, adjusted for working days as well as non-adjusted sales decreased by 8.3%. After 13 months of continual growth of sales in automotive segment, the sales for sale of motor vehicles and motorcycles (including spare parts) dropped by 8.7% and for repairs by 6.0%. The decrease was influenced mainly by a high comparison basis of last year.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices decreased by 0.3%, m-o-m; working days adjusted dropped by 1.0%, the same as non-adjusted, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales for sale of automotive fuel decreased by 5.6%, y-o-y, for food by 1.3%, while sales for non-food goods increased by 0.7%.
Besides the already mentioned drop of sales for sale of automotive fuel, sales decreased also in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (-1.4%) and in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-0.6%) as well as in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-2.4%). Other monitored groups of non-food goods recorded growth: retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+5.0%), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+4.0%), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (+2.6%), and dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (+1.6%). The biggest growth of sales was for retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+15.5%).
The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 102.4%; it was influenced by continuing price increase of automotive fuel in specialised stores (+8.5%) and also by a price increase of food. This development was reflected in the total price growth in retail sale in stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (+5.4%). The deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (-9.8%), clothing and footwear (-3.0%), and other household equipment in specialised stores (-2.0%).

For the entire Q2 2011, sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased at constant prices by 0.7%, y-o-y (at the same number of working days in Q2 2010 and Q2 2011); in automotive segment it was by 0.5% and in retail trade only (including sale of automotive fuel) by 0.8%. Sales for non-food goods increased by 2.7%, for food by 0.2%, while for automotive fuel they decreased by 3.8%.
