Sales in retail trade for the year 2022 dropped by 3.6%

Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 7.3%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y) in December; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they decreased by 0.7%.

ales in retail trade decreased by 3.6%, y-o-y.

Sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) decreased by 0.7% in real terms, month‑on‑month, in December. Sales for sale of food decreased by 1.4% and sales for sale of non-food goods by 1.0%, whereas sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 2.8%.

Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 7.3%, year-on-year, in December. Sales for sale of food decreased by 10.2% and sales for sale of non-food goods by 7.5%, whereas sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 5.6%.

“A year-on-year decrease of sales in retail trade in December was contributed to by both sale of food and non-food goods. Sales of these economic activities (industries) were decreasing for the eighth successive month already, while the decrease of sales for the sale of food even deepened and recorded the lowest value since 2001, i.e. since the beginning of the survey. Automotive fuel reported a y-o-y increase of sales in December after having been decreasing for seven successive months before,” Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Trade, Transport, and Services Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

Sales in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores decreased by 11.4%, in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 10.1%, in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 4.8%, sales in retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores by 0.8%, and in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores by 0.7%. On the other hand, sales for dispensing chemist and medical goods increased by 3.9%. Sales for sale of food decreased in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores by 11.6% and in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating by 10.1%. In other retail sale in non-specialised stores sales increased by 10.2%. In retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) sales decreased by 10.6%.

Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) increased in real terms by 0.7%, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, sales increased by 0.3%, while sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 2.6%, whereas sales for repair of motor vehicles decreased by 6.7%.

For the fourth quarter, retail sales decreased by 8.7%, year-on-year, in real terms; sales from sale of non-food goods decreased by 9.7%, sales from sale of food by 8.9%, and for automotive fuel by 2.1%. Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased by 1.2%.

“For the whole year 2022, sales in retail trade decreased by 3.6%; sales from sale of food decreased by 5.1%, from sale of non-food goods by 2.9%, and for automotive fuel by 1.5%. Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased by 4.2%,” Marie Boušková, Director of the Trade, Transport, Services, Tourism, and Environmental Statistics Department of the CZSO, adds.
