Interest in purchases of consumer goods increased

In August 2016, seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade at constant prices stagnated, month-on-month (m-o-m). Sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 5.6%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y); non-adjusted sales increased by 8.0%, y-o-y. The sales increase was influenced also by a higher number of working days compared to the previous year.
Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (CZ‑NACE 47) remained unchanged in August at constant prices, month-on-month (m-o-m). Sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 5.6%, year-on-year (y-o-y); non-adjusted sales increased by 8.0%, y-o-y. The year-on-year growth of non-adjusted sales was influenced by a higher number of working days; there were 2 working days more in August 2016 than in August 2015. Non-adjusted sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 12.4%, y-o-y, for sale of automotive fuel by 10.6%, and for food by 1.5%.
A sales increase took place in all main assortment types of stores. A long-term trend of growth continued in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (this time by 31.3%). As for non‑food assortment, sales were growing in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+14.3%), other household equipment in specialised stores (+14.1%), dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, and cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (+10.7%), clothing and footwear (+7.3%), and in information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+5.2%). Sales in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores increased by 6.8% and in retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating by 1.1%.
The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 98.3%. It was influenced mainly by lower prices of automotive fuel, information and communication equipment, and other household equipment in specialised stores. On the contrary, prices increased in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods, clothing and footwear, and dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, and cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores.
Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased at constant prices by 3.6%, m-o-m. Sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 11.5%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales increased by 18.8%, y-o-y, for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) it was by 19.7% and for repair by 16.0%.
