Retail trade grew at a lower rate

In September 2018, sales adjusted for calendar effects increased at constant prices by 2.5%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y); non-adjusted sales grew by 1.4%. Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade increased by 0.6%, month-on-month (m-o-m).

Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (CZ‑NACE 47) increased in September by 0.6% at constant prices, month-on-month. Sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 2.5%, sales for sale of non-food goods by 0.5%, and sales for sale of food by 0.2%.   

Sales in retail trade adjusted for calendar effects increased by 2.5%, year-on-year; sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 4.8%, sales for sale of automotive fuel by 3.4%, and sales for food by 0.9%. In September 2018, there was one working day less than in September 2017.   

Non-adjusted sales in retail trade increased by 1.4%, y-o-y. Sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 3.1% and sales for sale of automotive fuel grew by 2.0%, while sales for sale of food dropped by 0.9%.

An overall growth of retail trade was the most contributed to by an increase in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (growth of sales by 16.7%). Sales increased in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+9.3%), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+8.7%), and sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (+2.0). On the other hand, a drop was recorded in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (−3.7%) and in retail sale of dispensing chemist and medical and orthopaedic goods (−2.7%). Lower sales were made also in both retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores as well as in non‑specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (−2.8% and −0.8%, respectively).  

The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 101.9%. It was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel, dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles, food, and other household equipment. On the other hand, prices decreased in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores, retail sale of clothing and footwear, and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores.

Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased at constant prices by 3.2%, m-o-m; sales adjusted for calendar effects decreased by 6.7%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales decreased by 9.7%, y-o-y. Sales for repair of motor vehicles decreased by 12.6%, y-o-y; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) decreased by 9.0%, y-o-y.

For the entire third quarter of 2018, sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (CZ‑NACE 47) adjusted for calendar effects (with the same number of working days in the Q3 of 2018 and Q3 of 2017) increased at constant prices by 3.7%, y-o-y, the same as non-adjusted. Non-adjusted sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 5.8%, y-o-y, for sale of automotive fuel by 3.3%, and sales for sale of food increased by 1.4%. Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) adjusted for calendar effects decreased by 0.7%, y-o-y; non-adjusted sales dropped by 0.9%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales for repair of motor vehicles dropped by 2.6%, y-o-y; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) decreased by 0.4%, y-o-y.
