The highest increase in sale of motor vehicles since December 2007

In May, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased month-on-month by 0.4% at constant prices and decreased by 0.8% in the year-on-year comparison. The y-o-y growth of seasonally non-adjusted sales by 3.1% owed mainly to sale of motor vehicles, which was influenced, among others, by a higher number of working days.

With seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased in May by 0.4%, at constant prices, m-o-m, and decreased by 0.8% in the year-on-year comparison. Year-on-year growth of non-adjusted sales by 3.1% was owed to sale of motor vehicles (+3.8 p.p.), mainly thanks to a higher number of working days (+2), while the opposite influence came from retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco (-0.3 p.p.) and retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores (-0.4 p.p.) (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 3.3% at constant prices, m-o-m, and in the year-on-year comparison by 5.8%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales increased, y-o-y, by 13.3%, of which the sale of motor vehicles increased by 16.2% and maintenance and repair of motor vehicles decreased by 0.4%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales decreased, m-o-m, by 0.7% at constant prices, and by 3.3% in the year-on-year comparison. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 1.0%, y-o-y, of which retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores by 3.9%, retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco by 1.0% and sales of non-food goods dropped by 0.1%.
Among the observed assortments, drop came especially from retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-5.7%) and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-2.2%). The sales fall was also in retail sale via stalls and markets (-4.8%), and other retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets (-2.4%). On the other hand, sales grew in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+10.8%), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+9.3%), clothing and footwear (+2.4%), retail sale of second-hand goods in stores (+1.6%), and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+0.8%). The sales for goods at current prices of the ten most important enterprises (with 1,000 and more employees) decreased by 2.3%. These enterprises got for food by 0.5% less; however, from that for tobacco they got by 4.3% more and for alcoholic beverages by 1.2% more. They recorded a marked sales decrease for non-food goods (-10.2%).
The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 101.0%. A marked price increase was recorded in the sale of fuel (+19.4%), markedly smaller increase was reported for prices of pharmaceutical and medical goods (+1.7%). By contrast, the biggest price drops were reported for prices of information and communication equipment (-8.9%), second-hand goods (-4.9%), other retail sale in non-specialized stores (-3.3%), goods sold via the Internet or mail order houses (-3.2%), culture and recreation products (-2.9%), clothing and footwear (-2.6%), and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-2.1%).
