Sales in retail trade for the year 2025 increased by 3.5%

Sales in retail trade increased in real terms by 1.8%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y), in December; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they decreased by 0.1%. Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles increased by 2.6%, y-o-y, and in the m-o-m comparison by 0.1%. For the whole year 2025, sales in retail trade increased by 3.5%, sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles increased by 2.6%.  

Sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) decreased in real terms by 0.1%, month‑on‑month, in December. Sales from sale of non-food goods decreased by 0.6%, sales from sale of automotive fuel stagnated, and sales from sale of food increased by 0.6%.

Year-on-year, sales in retail trade increased in real terms by 1.8% in December. Sales from sale of automotive fuel increased by 3.9%, sales from sale of non-food goods by 2.0%, and sales from sale of food by 1.0%. 

“Sales in retail trade adjusted for price effects recorded a year-on-year growth in December, while the growth rate decelerated compared to the previous months. Sale of automotive fuel, non-food goods as well as of food contributed to the retail sales growth. For the whole year 2025, sales in retail trade increased by 3.5%. The biggest contributor to the increase was retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet,” Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Trade, Transport, and Services Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

Sales in retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores increased by 8.2%, year‑on-year; sales in dispensing chemist in specialised stores and in retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores increased by 5.8%, y-o-y. On the other hand, sales decreased in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 1.8%, in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 1.0%, in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores by 0.7%, and in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores by 0.5%. Sales in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating increased by 1.1% and in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores by 0.1%. In other retail sale in non‑specialised stores, sales increased by 4.3%. In retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) sales increased by 3.8%.

Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) increased in real terms by 0.1%, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, sales increased by 2.6%. Sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 3.0% and sales for repair of motor vehicles increased by 0.8%, y-o-y.  

For the whole year 2025, sales in retail trade increased in real terms by 3.5%, year-on-year; sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 8.4%, sales for non-food goods increased by 4.4%, and sales for sale of food by 0.6%. Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles increased by 2.6%; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 2.9% and sales for repair of motor vehicles increased by 1.6%.
