Year-on-year growth of sales in retail trade slowed down

Sales in retail trade increased in real terms by 2.8%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y) in January; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they decreased by 0.5%. Sales from sale and repair of motor vehicles increased by 0.7%, y-o-y. In the m-o-m comparison, they increased by 1.2%.

Sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) decreased in real terms by 0.5%, month‑on‑month, in January. Sales from sale of non-food goods decreased by 1.4%, whereas sales from sale of food increased by 0.4% and sales from sale of automotive fuel by 0.2%.

Year-on-year, sales in retail trade increased in real terms by 2.8% in January. Sales from the following increased: sale of automotive fuel by 5.4%, sale of non-food goods by 3.1%, and sale of food by 1.5%. 

“Sales in retail trade adjusted for price effects increased, year-on-year, as for sale of food, automotive fuel, as well as non-food goods. Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet and sale of automotive fuel were the biggest contributors to the growth of sales. Lower sales were recorded as for retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores and in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores. The growth rate of sales in retail trade decreased in January compared to the previous seven months,” Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Trade, Transport, and Services Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

Sales in retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores increased by 6.8%, year‑on-year; sales in dispensing chemist in specialised stores and in retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores increased by 6.7%, y-o-y, in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores by 4.5%, and in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 1.2%. On the other hand, sales decreased in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 7.6% and in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores by 2.0%. Sales in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores increased by 1.7% and in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating by 1.5%. In other retail sale in non‑specialised stores, sales increased by 2.9%. In retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) sales increased by 6.0%.

Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) increased in real terms by 1.2%, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, sales increased by 0.7%. Sales for repair of motor vehicles increased by 2.8%, y-o-y; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 0.1%, y-o-y.
