Sales in online shops increased the most

Sales in retail trade increased in real terms by 5.0%, year‑on‑year (y-o-y), in January; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they increased by 1.0%. Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased by 5.2%, y-o-y, and in the m-o-m comparison by 0.9%.

Sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) increased in real terms by 1.0%, month‑on‑month, in January. Sales from sale of non-food goods increased by 1.7% and sales from sale of automotive fuel by 1.2%; sales from sale of food stagnated.

Year-on-year, sales in retail trade increased in real terms by 5.0% in January. Sales from sale of non-food goods increased by 7.8%, sales from sale of automotive fuel increased by 7.3%, and sales from sale of food by 0.3%. 

“Sales in retail trade adjusted for price effects increased, year-on-year, in January. Higher sales were recorded in all main groups of stores, except for retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores. Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet contributed the most to the increase in sales in retail trade,” Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Trade, Transport, and Services Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

Sales increased, year-on-year, in the following: retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 9.1%, retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores by 8.5%, retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores by 6.9%, retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 4.6%, and in dispensing chemist in specialised stores and in retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores by 3.9%. On the other hand, sales decreased in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores by 3.0%. Sales in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating increased by 0.6% and in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores they decreased by 2.8%. In other retail sale in non‑specialised stores, sales increased by 6.3%. In retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) sales increased by 18.7%.

Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) decreased in real terms by 0.9%, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, sales decreased by 5.2%. Sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) and sales for repair of motor vehicles decreased both the same by 5.2%, y-o-y.

All data in the text of the news release are given at constant prices. The year-on-year development is published after having been adjusted for the influence of the number of working days (calendar effects). Month on‑month rates have also been seasonally adjusted. 
Enterprises are classified to the economic activity according to their principal (prevailing) activity, i.e. such an activity, from which the enterprise gets the highest value added.
