Retail trade increased moderately, sale of cars dropped almost by 15%

In January, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade increased month-on-month by 2.0% at constant prices and in the year-on-year comparison sales increased by 2.3%, not seasonally adjusted (NSA) by 1.1%. The growth came mainly from the development in retail trade with food, beverages and tobacco predominating in non-specialized stores. In wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles seasonally adjusted sales dropped by 2.0%, m-o-m, by 10.9% y-o-y and not seasonally adjusted by 14.2%.

According to a new classification the retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (NACE 47) includes also retail sale of fuel which was earlier covered by automotive segment (of which only wholesale, retail trade and repairs of automotive vehicles remained). Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade increased in January, m-o-m, by 2.0%, at constant prices, of which for food by 3.5% and the non-food goods by 0.7%. In the year on year comparison with seasonal and working day adjustments (there was one working day less in January 2009 compared to January 2008) sales increased by 2.3%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales increased by 1.1%, which was contributed to mainly by sales increase in food, beverages and tobacco by 2.5%, while, by contrast, sales from the sale of the non-food goods were 0.1 down.

The biggest contribution to the increase of sales in retail trade in total came from the retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco predominating in the non-specialized stores. The total growth was contributed to also by retail sale in specialized stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles and by retail sale of cultural and recreation goods which also recorded the fastest growth (approximately 11%). By contrast, negative impact on total results of retail trade came from retail sale of other household equipment (e.g. electrical appliances, furniture and related products, hardware, paints and glass), other retail sale in non-specialized stores and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores.

The price deflator related to the corresponding period in 2008 was 95.6%. The biggest price increase was recorded in specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco (+3.8%) and pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (+2.6%). By contrast, prices of fuel dropped by 23.0%, prices of second hand goods by 6.6% and so did prices in retail trade via Internet and mail order houses (-2.8%).

In January, according to data released by Eurostat, SA retail sales in the EU27 increased month-on-month by 0.6% at constant prices and year-on-year (working days adjusted) sales dropped by 1.2%. The biggest year-on-year sales increases were recorded in the United Kingdom (+2.9%) and in Poland and Sweden (both by 1.9%). Sales dropped most in Latvia (-19.8%), Lithuania (-15.2%) and Estonia (-12.9%).

In wholesale, retail trade and repairs of motor vehicles and motorcycles (NACE 45), SA sales decreased by 2.0% at constant prices month-on-month, and by 10.9% year-on-year. NSA sales dropped by 14.2%, year-on-year, of which sales from the sale of motor vehicles by 14.7% and from repairs by 11.7%.

In retail trade and in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (NACE 45+47) SA sales at constant prices increased by 0.8%, month-on-month, while, year-on-year, sales dropped by 1.8%. NSA sales decreased by 3.3%, year-on-year.
