M-o-m growth, y-o-y drop

In October, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased month-on-month by 1.1% at constant prices and in the year-on-year comparison they dropped by 3.1%. A 4.7% y-o-y drop of non-adjusted sales was partly contributed to fewer (-1) working days this year compared to 2008.

With seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased in October by 1.1%, at constant prices, m-o-m, and in the year on year comparison they fell by 3.1% (with only WDA –3.0%). Seasonally non-adjusted sales dropped compared to the corresponding period in 2008 by 4.7% partly due to fewer (-1) working days. The drop was most contributed to by retail sale and repair of motor vehicles and the sale of the non-food goods. In contrast, a slow-down of decline came from the sale of goods with food, beverages and tobacco predominating in non-specialized stores.

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 1.7% at constant prices in the month-on-month comparison and fell by 6.8%, y-o-y. Seasonally non-adjusted sales dropped, y-o-y, by 9.4%, of which sales from the sale of motor vehicles by 9.0% and from repair by 11.6%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales increased, m-o-m, by 0.9% at constant prices and in the year-on-year comparison they fell by 1.6%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales fell by 2.8%, y-o-y, of which sales from the sale of the non-food goods decreased by 5.1%. In contrast, sales from the sale of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 1.3%.

Among observed items the most important impact on total drop came from the sale of household products in specialized stores (sales drop by 11.5%), sale of automotive fuel (-3.9%) and information and communication equipment (-9.9%). The fastest growth of sales was reported for the sale of clothing and footwear (+11.1%) but a slow-down of decline was most contributed to by the sale in non-specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating including big chain stores (+2.4%).

The price deflator related to the corresponding period in 2008 was 96.0%. The biggest price decrease was recorded in the sale of fuel (-12.2%), information and communication equipment (-8.1%), second-hand goods (-6.2%) and the goods in non-specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating (-4.3%). In contrast, growing were e.g. prices of pharmaceutical and medical goods (+2.8%).

In October, according to data released by Eurostat, SA retail sales (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 increased month-on-month by 0.3% at constant prices and, working day adjusted sales dropped by 0.9%, year-on-year. The biggest drops of sales were reported for Latvia (-29.1%), Lithuania (-24.7%) and Estonia (-18.6%). The fastest growths were reported for Belgium (+4.4%), Sweden (+4.1%) and Poland (+3.9%).
