Low y-o-y growth of sales of non-food goods

Month-on-month comparison:
In October 2004, compared with September, seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment rose by 1.1%. This figure was predominantly affected by higher sales in the automotive segment (+2.9%) and higher sale of food (+0.9%). Sale of non-food goods dropped (-0.2%).
Year-on-year comparison :
Seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales grew by 4.5%, of which by 7.7% in the automotive segment and by 3.0% in the remaining retail trade (of which sale of food +3.9% and sale of non-food goods +2.5%). The most considerable growth was recorded for sale of motor vehicles (+9.9%) and sale of automotive fuel (+8.9%), whereas maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (-0.7%) and sale of other non-food goods in specialised stores (-0.2%) fell.
Not seasonally adjusted sales were up by 1.7%, which was primarily affected by fewer working days (-2) in October 2004. Compared to the average rate from the beginning of the year, the growth rate of retail sales (incl. the automotive segment) was by 0.2 percentage points slower. Like in preceding months, the most considerable sales increase was reported for enterprises with 100 or more employees (+5.9%).
Sales in the automotive segment rose by 2.1%, which was an above-the-average rate if compared with the average index from the beginning of the year (100.3%). This development was due to higher sale of automotive fuel and higher sale of motor vehicles (+6.1% and +2.2%, respectively). Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles dropped by 6.5%.
Sales in retail trade (excl. the automotive segment) rose by 1.5%, sale of food growing faster (+3.7%) than sale of non-food goods (+0.1%).
Sales in the individual assortment types of stores developed as follows:
- sales in non-specialised stores increased by 3.1%, of which in stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating by 3.8% and in stores selling predominantly non-food goods by 0.3%;
- like non-specialised stores, specialised stores saw higher growth of sales of food, beverages and tobacco (+3.2%) than sale of non-food goods (+0.1%);
- the low growth of sales in specialised stores with non-food goods, in comparison with the average figure from the beginning of the year, was affected by lower sale of other non-food goods (-2.0%), which has a significant share in total sale in specialised stores with non-food goods, and lower sale of pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles by 2.1% (this sale rose uninterruptedly between October 2001 and September 2004). Other sale was up – sale of textiles, clothing and footwear by 4.6% and sale of electrical appliances, hardware, furniture and other household goods by 3.6%;
- sale via stalls and markets and door-to-door selling recorded higher demand (+4.4%), while sale via mail order houses shrank (-3.5%). Sale of second-hand goods stagnated.
International comparison :
In October, according to Eurostat estimates, seasonally adjusted retail sales excl. the automotive segment in the EU25 were up 0.3% m-o-m; and up 1.5% y-o-y adjusted for working days. Among EU Member States, for which the data were available, sales increased y-o-y in Denmark (+10.0%), United Kingdom (+5.6%), Portugal (+4.4%), Sweden (+3.5%), Poland (+3.0%), France (+2.3%), and Spain (+0.2%). Sales fell in Belgium (-1.7%) and Germany (-1.1%). According to the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, not seasonally adjusted retail sales in Slovakia grew by 3.1% y-o-y.
Note :
In terms of methodology, the results of the statistical survey on sale of motor vehicles are not comparable with the data given by the Automotive Industry Association, for the latter include only sale of new motor vehicles in physical units (in pieces). The statistical survey embraces sales by enterprises selling not only new but also second-hand cars, also sale of spare parts incl. wholesale trade and export sales.
